CHAPEL HILL --- C.D. Mock, an assistant coach and former NCAA champion at the University of North Carolina, has been named the Tar Heels' next head wrestling coach.    Mock, a 1982 UNC graduate, will assume the head coaching duties at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season when Bill Lam retires. Lam, who has won 14 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, previously announced he is coaching his 30th and final season with the Tar Heels in 2002-03.    "C.D. Mock was one of our greatest wrestlers ever, but he's going to be our next head coach because of what we see in his ability to lead our wrestling program to even greater heights," says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "He has demonstrated to me he knows how to run a program, how to recruit student-athletes who will succeed at the University of North Carolina and how to teach wrestlers to improve themselves on and off the mats. We are very fortunate to be able to turn the program over to C.D. It's been in great hands for 30 years and we see no reason for that to change."    Mock is in his third year as an assistant coach at UNC. In 1982, he became Carolina's first NCAA wrestling champion (at 134 pounds) on a Tar Heel team that finished fifth in the NCAA Tournament.  Mock finished that season with an unbeaten and untied 35-0 record.     The Holland, Pa., native won three ACC titles while at Carolina and was a two-time All-America. He had a career record of 108-9. Mock received the Patterson Medal, which is presented to the UNC senior student-athlete who demonstrates overall athletic excellence. He was named one of the ACC's Alltime 50 Greatest Wrestlers.    "I am grateful for the opportunity Mr. Baddour has given me," says Mock. "I am also humbled and honored by the confidence Mr. Baddour, Coach Lam and the UNC administration, wrestlers and alumni have demonstrated in me. I am inspired by the awesome responsibility of leading such fine young men and representing the finest University in the country. The opportunity to take this program to the next level is a challenge I gladly accept."    "Bill Lam has positioned the program perfectly for the future. It is a privilege to be inheriting a program with the tradition, support and potential Carolina Wrestling has. I believe the future of our program is very bright. However, this year is equally important to us and we have no intention of waiting until next year to meet our challenges," he said.    Mock returned to coach at UNC in 2000 from Newtown, Pa., where he was the president of Equity Consultants Company and the wrestling coach at Council Rock High School.    "I think it's destiny for C.D. to take the program," says Lam. "I didn't end up in Chapel Hill by chance and C.D. didn't come here to wrestle by chance. I believe it's a continuation of that destiny for him to take Carolina to the next level, which is to compete for a national championship."    "He has proven himself as an assistant coach," says Lam. "He can recruit and he can work well with the young men who come through that wrestling room. He has a great understanding of the University of North Carolina and its wrestling program and knows the importance of developing young men as good citizens just as much as great wrestlers."
