INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 30, 2002) - In an effort made by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Foundation to educate coaches, officials and wrestlers about the misuse of a legal front headlock in wrestling, an instructional video depicting the proper uses as well as the illegal uses of a front headlock was released today for nearly 9,600 high schools across America that sponsor wrestling. For the past two wrestling seasons, the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee has received an alarming number of complaints about the front headlock and its apparent misuse. "The hold entails a subtle repositioning of the hand which applies pressure to the neck area which can cause temporary unconsciousness," NFHS Assistant Director Jerry Diehl said. "Wrestlers have been keen enough to know where the official was and then used the hold in an unacceptable fashion." The goal of the video, "Front Headlock: The Problem," is to be instructional in nature and to show coaches, officials and wrestlers how a legal hold can easily be turned into an illegal hold, which can affect the opponent, according to Diehl. "The preferred outcome is that coaches do not teach or condone the hold in the practice room or in competition," Diehl said. "It should also give officials clues of what to look for when they officiate and for the athlete to know that it is not a maneuver that should be utilized. The philosophy of, 'it's okay if you don't get caught,' is not part of sportsmanship and fair play in interscholastic sports." The video was made possible with the help of the following sponsors: USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Cliff Keen Products and the Tanita Corporation.
