Moscow, Russia - Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) is now the champion of the world. Byers, wrestling in his first World Championships since 1999, captured the titles with a 3-0 victory over Mihaly Deak-Bardos (Hungary) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. "This is an unbelievable feeling. I feel great," said Byers, who was almost speechless after his win. "I had a plan coming into this tournament, and it worked out perfectly for me. I am just so happy right now." Byers, clearly the underdog in all of his matches outside of pool competition, scored a throw on every opponent he faced in the tournament, and that is how he defeated Deak-Bardos. After a scoreless first period, the two competitors engaged in the clinch to start the second period. After the two circled around for nearly 30 seconds, Byers was able to get his body underneath Deak-Bardos and throw him to his back to take a 3-0 lead. That was all the scoring Byers would need as he held off one last attempt by Deak-Bardos in par terre midway through the second period. "I have felt good in the clinch the entire tournament. I could feel myself gaining leverage at one point, and that is when I decided to throw it," Byers said. In the first period, it appeared Byers may have met his match. After being whistled for passivity, Byers was placed down on the mat. Deak-Bardos worked hard to set up a gut wrench, and at one point, it appeared he would be able to score exposure points on Byers. But the big heavyweight kept his position and held firm, giving up no points and setting the tone for the match. "I thought he had me on that one," Byers said, relieved that he did not give up a point early in the match. "He had it tight, and at one point I thought I was going to turn, but I just fought as hard as I could out there." In other finals, two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazarian (Bulgaria) won his first World Championship with a 3-0 win over Wlodzimierz Zawadzki (Poland), who captured Olympic gold himself in 1996, at 60 kg/132 lbs. Nazarian used his favorite move, the reverse lift, to score three points in the first period. Nazarian had not been in the finals of the World Championships since 1995, and was previously a two-time runner-up at this event. At 74 kg/163 lbs., Varteres Samourgashev (Russia) defeated Badri Khasaia (Georgia) by a score of 3-0. Samourgashev, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2001 World Champion, was able to score all of his points in the first period and hold off late attacks by Khasia, a two-time European Champion. At 96 kg/211.75 lbs., Mehmet Oezal (Turkey) defeated Koram Mohamed Guder Ibragim (Egypt), 15-11. In the wildest match of the evening, both wrestlers traded throws in the first and second periods. Ibragim cut the lead to 11-10 with just over one minute left in the match, but a reverse lift by Oezal ended all comeback hopes Ibragim had.
