Moscow, Russia - Before the 2002 Greco-Roman World Championships, many thought of Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) as Rulon Gardner's replacement. That may no longer hold true after Byers advanced to the semifinals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on Sunday morning. Byers defeated Youri Evseytchik (Israel) in overtime, 3-1. In the second period, Byers stepped out of bounds while in the clinch, giving Evseytchik an early 1-0 advantage. The match went to overtime with the same score, when Byers used the clinch to his advantage. He wore down Evseytchik before throwing him to his back 30 seconds into overtime to earn the win. For Byers, going to the clinch with Evseytchik was the situation he wanted going into the match. "It was what I wanted to do, but the first one didn't work out right," Byers said while preparing for his next match. "He is a big guy. I had a good lift on him in the first period, but I knew he would wear down eventually." Byers will now face Xenofon Koutsioubas (Greece) in the semifinals. Koutsioubas won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. "I need to stay solid. He is tall with long arms, so I need to bury his head and be smart on my feet," Byers added. Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) wanted a rematch with two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazarian (Bulgaria), but things did not go as planned for Gruenwald in the 60 kg/132 lbs. quarterfinal match. When Gruenwald was whistled for passivity two minutes into the match, Nazarian immediately attempted his favorite move - the reverse lift. Nazarian executed the move twice, the first time for six points and the second for four points in earning the technical superiority win. T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), noticeably limping throughout the match after reaggravating the torn MCL in his right knee, was unable to get any offense together in a 3-0 loss to Volodymir Shatskikh (Ukraine) in a 74 kg/163 lbs. qualification match. Shatsikh was able to score two takedowns by getting Dantzler off balance and getting behind him. He sealed the win with a gut wrench one minute into the second period. "I couldn't push off and I couldn't change levels," Dantzler said after recording a 2-1 record at his first World Championships. "I am about 65% right now, but I know if I could have gotten on top, I could have turned him. But since I couldn't get any offense going, I realized quickly that it was going to be tough to get on top." Only one 2001 World Champion has a chance to repeat as a gold medalist in 2002 - Filiberto Ascuy (Cuba) at 74 kg/163 lbs. The two-time Olympic gold medalist advanced to the semifinals with a victory over Tamas Berzizca (Hungary). Yuri Patrikeev (Russia) advanced to the semifinals with a dominating 9-0 win. Patrikeev, the 2001 European champion, will face off with 2001 World silver medalist Mihaly Deak-Bardos (Hungary) at 120 kg/164.5 lbs. 2002 Greco-Roman World Championships Moscow, Russia Sep. 20-22, 2002 U.S. PLAY-BY-PLAY Volodymir Shatskikh (Ukraine) dec.
