Moscow, Russia - Garrett Lowney (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) never expected to be wearing street clothes before the second session of Greco-Roman World Championship action at 96 kg/211.75 lbs. But that is exactly what Lowney is doing after suffering two surprising defeats. Lowney, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, lost his first match to reigning World Champion Aleksandr Bezruchkin (Russia) 7-0, but then suffered a crushing blow by losing a 3-0 decision to Ali Mollov (Bulgaria) to knock him out of the tournament. "(Bezruchkin) caught me off-guard with a few of the positions. We were very unfamiliar with his style of wrestling," said Lowney. "I never got into a decent flow in either match. In the second match, my head just wasn't in it after the loss." Greco-Roman World Team Coach Andy Seras shared Lowney's sentiments of frustration and shock. "It just proves that anything can happen at the World Championships," stated Seras. "Getting beat by the World Champion, it is almost impossible to not be down going into a second match. We felt Garrett was prepared for this tournament, but it is a tough draw when you lack a lot of Greco-Roman competition." In other U.S. action, Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) all won their first matches. Gruenwald, who is wrestling in his second World Championships, defeated Seref Tufenk (Turkey), 4-2. Tuefenk was the European Champion this year and a Junior World Champion in 2001. Gruenwald will next face Valentin Malutin (Kyrgyzstan), whom Tufenk defeated by technical superiority in the first round of pool competition. Dantzler was dazzling in his first World Championship match at 74 kg/163 lbs. Dantzler defeated Joacim Iversen (Norway) by an 11-0 technical superiority in the first period. Dantzler spent most of the two minutes and three seconds on top with Iversen on his back. He scored exposure points on four separate occasions and never gave Iversen a chance to get back into the match. "I wasn't nervous. I just wanted to go out and show the everyone what I am capable of," Dantzler stated after his match. "My main focus in any match is to finish when I get on top. Everyone will have chances during any given match to score from the top, but I just need to make sure and take advantage of my time." Dantzler will now face Georgios Panagiotou (Greece), who defeated Iversen in his first match 4-0. The winner of this match will advance from the pool. The 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Byers, wrestling in the World Championships for the first time since 1999, defeated Jidong Song (China) 6-0 in his first pool competition match. Byers will next face Dzmitry Debelka (Belarus) to advance out of the pool. Debelka, who was a bronze medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, defeated Song 3-0 in overtime. Gruenwald, Dantzler and Byers could be the three most unlikely heroes for a U.S. Greco-Roman Team that expected to win at least three medals. "Those three guys need to win all of the matches they are supposed to, and probably come up with an upset as well. I completely believe in them, though. I know what they are capable of and what they can do," Seras stated. European Champion Yuri Patrikeyev (Russia) won both of his matches at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. to advance out of his pool as well. Patrikeyev, who some Russians have labeled as "the next Karelin", won both of his matches by 4-0 scores. The final round of pool competition will begin at 4:00 p.m. Moscow time. 2002 Greco-Roman World Championships Moscow, Russia Sep. 20-22, 2002 U.S. RESULTS 60 kg/132 lbs. - Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) dec.
