Moscow, Russia - Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) and Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) were able to advance out of their pools on Friday night at the 2002 Greco-Roman World Championships, but neither could make it farther than the quarterfinals. Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was unable to win his final pool competition match, sending him home early. In his final match of pool competition at 55 kg/121 lbs., Paulson won by an 11-0 technical superiority over Hamou Oubrick (France) to advance out of his pool. But in the quarterfinals, Paulson fell into a 2-0 deficit and was unable to rebound. Geider Mamadaliyev (Russia) scored a takedown and one point for a lift in the first period to take the early lead. Paulson fought back, though, scoring a takedown late in the second period to cut the lead to 2-1 heading to overtime. In the extra session, Paulson locked into the clinch first. In what was a controversial call, the official ruled that Paulson stepped out of bounds before Mamadaliyev, which gave Mamadaliyev the third point necessary to win the match. Vering advanced out of his pool after pinning Minguzzi Andreas (Italy) in the first period. Vering dominated the entire match, holding a 7-0 lead at the time of the fall. But like Paulson, Vering could not advance in the competition, losing a 5-1 decision to Mohamed Ibrahim Abd El Fattah (Egypt). Leading 2-1 in the second, El Fattah scored a takedown and a two-point gut wrench to put the match out of reach. Bracken was unable to advance from his pool, losing a 4-1 decision to Farid Mansurov (Azerbaijan). Bracken fell behind 4-0 in the first period after giving up a gut wrench and then getting takedown down and giving up two more exposure points. 2001 World Champions Hassan Rangraz (Iran) and Ara Abrahamian (Sweden) advanced to the semifinals which will take place on Saturday. Rangraz, wrestling at 55 kg/121 lbs., survived a couple of scares, holding off Tibor Olah (Hungary) 10-9 in pool competition and pinning Irakli Tchotchua (Georgia) in the qualification round after falling behind late in the match. Against Olah, Rangraz had to score two exposure points late in the match to tie the score at 9-9. His takedown with 10 seconds remaining sealed the win. Abrahamian defeated two-time Olympic champion Hamza Yerlikaya (Turkey) in the quarterfinals 3-0 to advance to the 84 kg/185 lbs. semifinal. Abrahamian won the world title last year at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Aleksandr Menshikov (Russia), who placed fourth in the world last year, will be in the other semifinal at 84 kg/185 lbs. after his win over Bojan Mijatov (Yugoslavia), 5-0. Vaghinak Galustyan (Armenia) lost to Maksim Semenov (Russia) 5-3 in the qualification round. The other four U.S. wrestlers weighed-in and received their draws on Friday. Competition at these four weight divisions will begin on Saturday, Sept. 21. The opponents for each wrestler in their pool competition were determined from the blind draw from the weigh-ins. 2000 Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) received his pool opponents at 60 kg/132 lbs. He will battle Seref Turfenk of Turkey and Valentin Malutin of Kyrgyzstan in his pool. There are 37 athletes in the weight class. Gruenwald was sixth at the 2000 Olympic Games and 10th at the 2001 World Championships. TC Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will face Joacim Iversen of Norway and Georgios Panagiotou of Greece in his pool competition at 74 kg/163 lbs. There are 33 athletes in his weight class. This is Dantzler's first World Championships. 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) received a very difficult draw at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. Lowney will face 2001 World Champion Aleksandr Berzruchkin of Russia and past World medalist Ali Mollov of Bulgaria. There are 28 athletes in his weight class. Lowney faced a similar challenge at the 2000 Olympics, when he defeated a five-time World Champion, Gogi Koguachvili of Russia, in his pool competition then went on to win the bronze medal. Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will also have to be at his best to advance from his pool at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. He will face 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Dzmitry Dziabelka of Belarus, as well as Jidong Song of China. There were 25 athletes in his weight class. Byers has competed in one previous World Championships, placing sixth at the 1999 World Championships.
