STANDINGS IN THE END OF THE FIRST THREE WEIGHT CLASSES from varzeshkar.com VK -- After the completion of the first three weight of the Wrestling World Championships held at Tehran Cuba stands in first place with 19 points with one gold and one silver. Iran is expected to climb the chart by the end of tommorrow as the upper weight class championships will be held. 1) CUBA 19 points 2) Russia 18 points 3) Ukrain 18 points 4) Iran 17 points DABIR RECEIVES SILVER, KHODAEE GRABS BRONZE IN WORLD WRESTLING Tehran, Sept 7, IRNA -- Iran's top wrestler and multiple world medalist Alireza Dabir received the silver medal of the 66 weight category in the Tehran 2002 World Freestyle Championships Friday afternoon after losing to Elbrus Tedeev from Ukraine 5-4 in the final. Dabir who was enjoying a tremendous boost from over 12,000 Iranian spectators jammed in the wrestling arena of the Azadi Sports Complex made a disappointing start by losing four points to his well-shaped opponent. However, the Ukrainian wrestler was not able to maintain the dominance and Dabir succeeded to grab four points from the world champion Tedeev in a row to make up for the losses. The bout ended in a tie, but it was Tedeev who was finally able to get a takedown to win the crown of the category during the overtime. This year's silver added to Dabir's honors who had won the 2001 World silver at 63 kg, the 2000 Olympics gold medal at 58 kg in Sydney, and the 1998 World gold medal at 58 kg. Meanwhile, Iran's Majid Khodaee in the 84 weight category won his bout against Arkadiy Tzopa from Bulgaria in a fantastic 7-1 victory to grab the bronze medal of the contests. IGALI WINS POOL, ADVANCES TO QUARTER-FINALS, EWERS FINISHED IN 8TH PLACE WRESTLING CANADANEWS RELEASE Ewers Finishes 8th Neal Ewers, from Burnaby Mountain W.C. (66 kg. weight category) lost an exciting 4-1 match in the quarter-finals against hometown favorite, and Olympic Champion, Alireza Dabir of Iran. For Neal, who earlier beat I. Selloum of France, 10-0, A. Raska of Estonia, 9-1 and R. Boelisteanu, from Moldova, 4-1, this was his only loss in the tournament, but capped off a great performance at the first World Championships for the 23 year old rookie on the team. Igali Wins Pool Olympic and World Champion, Daniel Igali from Burnaby Mountain W.C. (74 kg.) beat B. Batchuluun from Mongolia in his first match, 5-0 and F. Polyanodis from Greece by the same score of 5-0. As a result of these two victories Daniel wins his pool and advances into the quarter-finals against V. Sorotin of the Ukraine tomorrow. 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Dean Schmeichel (96 kg.) from the University of Calgary W.C., lost his first match to Belarus wrestler, A. Shemarov, 2-1 in overtime. In his second match he defeated Y. Abdullayev of Kazakastan, 3-0. His next match is tomorrow morning against A. Sarkhoshyan of Armenia. Saeed Azarbayjani from the Niagara W.C. in St. Catharines, Ontario (60 kg.), was eliminated from competition after losing two close matches against P. Petrov of Russia, 3-1 and D. Zakhartdinov of Uzbekistan, 3-2. The last match featured a sudden death clinch where Saeed was initially declared the winner, before the officials reversed their decision in a controversial move. Saeed was in a position to beat both of these top international performers and proved he belongs in the top group in this tournament. SAITIEV WINS IN CONTROVERSY AS KHOADEI GETS BRONZE from varzeshkar.com VK -- Majid Khodaei, the Iranian 84 KG freestylist received the bronze medal at the 2002 world championships after demolishing A. Tzopa of Bulgari by the score of 7-0. It was relevent that Khodaei would have no trouble getting silver as he got 5 points in the first 2 minutes of the match. In the finals of the 84 KG weight class Saitieve of Russia beated the Olympic silver medalist and world champion X. Romero in controversy in overtime. Romero seemed to have gotten the first point as he was celebrating but the officials awarded Saitiev a point for getting the take-down first. DABIR BAGS THE SILVER TEHRAN- September 06 (IranSportsPress.com): Ali Reza Dabir's late efforts to stage a comeback against Ukrainian E, Tedeev failed to secure him the gold medal in the 66kg weight category. Dabir suffered consecutive take downs and fell behind the two time world champion 4 - 0 but was able to fight back and tie the score 4 - 4. Although Dabir had been complaining of a reoccurring injury in his calf late yesterday he was able to stage a comeback which consisted of two turns and a take down. Iranian officials and commentators thought Dabir had gained five points because a turn, exposure of the back and another takedown. To their dismay Dabir was only awarded four points. Tedeev of Ukraine finished Dabir off in extra time with a quick take down. His tactic for the take down was an exact replay of his pervious moves against Dabir. Dabir got off to a horrible start after being down by the score of 4-0. Dabir gave up 4 take-downs in a row. As everyone anticipated Dabir came back and tied the match in the final second of the six minute match where he forced it into overtime. Ukrainian E. Tedeev got take-down once again to end the match into his favor in over-time. HEIDARI AND HAJIZADEH CONTINUE FORWARD TEHRAN- September 06 (IranSportsPress.com): Iran's 120 kg representative Reza Rezaee was confronted with a late setback. Rezaee who led his meet with Turkish counterpart Poltaci lost in the final seconds 3-2. Rezaee was awarded two points at separate times in two takes downs while Poltaci was awarded two points with only fifteen seconds left on a turn to give him the win. Iran's Alireza Heidari decisively defeated Chen Dakuan of China 11-0 in his final bout of the day. Heidari who earlier in the day topped Abdollatif of Iraq with the same score said after his bout to an Iranian sports reporter, "My Chinese opponent did not put up much of a fight. He was not an opponent that could give me much trouble but I think my hardest match will come against the winner of the bout between Belarus and Ukraine." Heidari went on to thank the crowd and said, "I hope I can make the people here and the people of Iran proud of me by bringing them a medal." Heidari will next meet Rolf Scherrer of Switzerland. Mehdi Hajizadeh representing Iran at 74kg put nine points on the board in the second three minutes of his bout against his counterpart from Moldova to defeat him 12-1. After toppling Diaconu of Moldova, Hajizadeh will next meet Daniel Gonzales of Cuba. KHADEM TALKS ABOUT ALI REZA DABIR'S SITUATION TEHRAN- September 06 (IranSportsPress.com): The head of the Iranian Wrestling Federation Reza Khadem announced to the crowd what had happen earlier in the day between Iranian Ali Reza Dabir and Russian Botaev. Khadem announced to the crowd before the start of the fourth session on the second day that Iranian coaches along with Ali Reza Dabir made the case that his hands were never locked.
