Lincoln, Neb. - Charles Burton was officially hired as an assistant coach at the Univ. of Nebraska on Wednesday. Burton, who has spent the last four seasons as the head assistant coach at Indiana, Univ., will begin his new position immediately. "I think Charles Burton brings a great attitude and obviously he has a great work ethic. He knows what it takes to be the best. He has had to work hard to get where he is at, not only as a wrestler but as a coach," stated Nebraska head coach Mark Manning. "He is going to help with recruiting and working out with our bigger weight guys from 174 on up. I think he sees us a program that is trying to make that next step from being a top ten program to compete for a national championship. He knows we have a lot of good young kids and he has a lot of belief in us coaches." "I am excited to make a move and go to an established program," Burton said. "I want to help make a difference and put this team back to the top of the nation." Burton also feels that the move from a Big Ten school to a Big XII school was something that he needed to do. "At this time right now, it is much better for my family. I have a lot to offer and I will be sad to leave the program here at Indiana, but this will be better for my wife and her job as a news anchor as well as better for me in moving to a nationally prominent program that is used to placing in the top ten in the nation," Burton said. Burton placed third at the 2002 U.S. World Team Trials for freestyle at 84 kg/185 lbs. to earn a spot on U.S. National Team. This is Burton's third year on the U.S. National Team. In 2000, Burton earned a spot on the Olympic Freestyle team and placed fifth at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Burton first earned a spot on the U.S. Freestyle National Team in 1999 with a second-place finish at the World Team Trials in Seattle, Washington. He went on to win the 2000 Tahkiti Cup in Tehran, Iran, the 2001 Kiev Open in the Ukraine and the 2001 Trophe Milone in Rome, Italy. Burton also won medals at both the 1997 and 2000 Pan American Games. He took home the bronze medal from the 2001 World Cup and was crowned the USA Wrestling Freestyle Belt Series champion for 2000. In college, Burton was an All-American for Boise State Univ. with a career record of 101-32-1. He placed third at the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Burton's wife Sarah is a television news anchor in Indiana. The two are expecting a child in November.
