Doug Brown, IPTV COLLEGE WRESTLING announcer and wrestling friend, dies at the age of 66

It is with great sadness that Iowa Public Television announces the death of its long-time broadcaster and friend, Doug Brown, in Ames, Iowa, on August 14, 2002.    Doug was a superb announcer for Iowa Public Television, having broadcast numerous sporting and cultural events for Iowa Public Television since the early 1970's. Most people remember Doug as the voice of IPTV'S COLLEGE WRESTLING AND HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING Coverage for nearly 25 years. Doug retired from broadcasting in 1998 - both from Iowa Public Television and his from his fulltime employment  as Program Director of WOI Public Radio in Ames, Iowa. Doug was an on-air personality for WOI for 35 years and was best known for his work on "The Book Club," where he read more than 250 books, and as host of "The Music Shop," the oldest continuous radio program in the nation.    IPTV produced a feature about Doug for his retirement in 1998. He'll be greatly missed," said Doug Brooker, Executive Producer of Special Events and Iowa Affairs at Iowa Public Television. "It was a privilege and honor to have worked with Doug for nearly 25 years. His dedication to his craft and the sport of wrestling was truly remarkable, "said Brooker. "His insightful wrestling commentary was often low-key, yet when an upset occurred, it was not uncommon to hear Doug excitedly say "holy, cow, it's an upset…" His attention to detail, incredible research and accuracy in all aspects of his commentary were his trademarks," said Brooker.    Memorial services for Doug Brown will be held Saturday, August 24, at 2pm in the Ames City Hall Auditorium.
