Colorado Springs, Colo. - Stephanie Murata (Minden, Nev./Sunkist Kids) won a 3-2 decision over Jenny Wong (Stillwater, Minn./Sunkist Kids) on Tuesday afternoon to earn the 51 kg/112 lbs. spot on the 2002 U.S. Women's Freestyle World Team. The win was Murata's second in a row in a best-of-three Championship Series to decide the final spot on the World Team. Murata won the first match 9-0. "This wasn't a surprise," said Murata, who captured a World silver medal last year and will now compete on her sixth U.S. Women's World Team. "I am always looking for good matches to keep me working. Nothing is a surprise if you are training hard." For the second match in a row, Murata opened the scoring with a takedown after Wong was unable to finish a single-leg attempt. Leading 1-0, Murata began to more offensive, but on a shot attempt, Wong sprawled her leg out and used a crotch lift to take a 2-1 lead. It was Wong's first lead of the Championship Series. "She used good technique from that position. I made a small mistake, but either way, I still had to score three points to win," Murata said. Murata tied the match at 2-2 on the same scramble by finishing behind for the takedown. In the second period, Murata was able to get deep on a single-leg and finish for a 3-2 advantage, which would turn out to be the final score. A new USA Wrestling rule approved by the Women's Sports Committee allows for additional women's wrestle-offs at the three non-Olympic weight classes (51 kg, 59 kg and 67 kg). The athletes that placed second or third in the World Team Trials at the four Olympic weights (48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg) are allowed to challenge the winners of the three non-Olympic weights for a spot on the U.S. Women's World team. Wong won the 51 kg/112 lbs. weight class at the World Team Trials in June by defeating Katie Kunimoto (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Pacific) two matches to none. Therefore, in the Special Wrestle-off, Wong was automatically in the Championship finals. Murata placed second at the World Team Trials to Tina George-Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs., an Olympic weight class. On Monday, Murata defeated Mary Kelly by technical fall in a Special Wrestle-Off to determine who would wrestle Wong for the Women's World Team spot. Kelly lost in the Challenge Tournament finals at the U.S. World Team Trials to Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Wilson's Angels) by fall at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. She placed third overall at that Olympic weight. "Now I just have to concentrate on the World Championships. I have to keep working on my technique," Murata said. "It will be nice to have the same coach in my corner for a while now. I am looking forward to the challenge at the World Championships and at improving my previous placements there." The 2002 U.S. Women's Freestyle World Team will compete at the Women's World Championships in Halkida, Greece, November 1-2. Match 2: Stephanie Murata, Minden, Nev. (Sunkist Kids) dec.
