Stan Dziedzic of Roswell, Ga. was elected as the new President of USA Wrestling during the organization's Board of Directors meeting at the Radisson Inn and Suites Airport in Colorado Springs, Colo., August 17. Dziedzic served on the Board of Directors as an at-large member prior to his election. He will serve a two-year term as the president of USA Wrestling, the national governing body of wrestling in the United States. Dziedzic won a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games at 163 pounds in freestyle wrestling in Montreal, Canada. He was the World Champion at 163 pounds in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1977. He was a NCAA champion for Slippery Rock Univ. prior to his international career. Dziedzic served as wrestling's National Freestyle Coach in the early 1980's. He is currently an executive with Lehman Bros. in Atlanta, Ga. "I want to thank you for your faith in putting the organization in my hands," said Dziedzic. "I am certainly encouraged by the prospects for the organization. We have an unique opportunity for the future. I've never seen wrestling so aligned, from the grassroots to the Olympic level." Dziedzic takes over from Bruce Baumgartner of Edinboro, Pa. as president. Baumgartner completed his second term as president, completing a four-year stint as USA Wrestling's top volunteer leader. The president may only serve two terms, according to USA Wrestling's by-laws. In his report to the Board, Executive Director Rich Bender praised Baumgartner for his service to the sport, as well as his leadership of the organization during a busy, challenging and successful time. Bender read a long list of accomplishments reached by USA Wrestling during Baumgartner's term. "The most successful athlete in U.S. wrestling history has been one of our most successful business leaders," said Bender. "Words can't describe what you have done for me personally and for the organization as our leader." Baumgartner received a service award from USA Wrestling, as well as a gift of private golf lessons, receiving a standing ovation from the Board of Directors. Later in the meeting, Set Agonian of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association presented Baumgartner with a special medal for his service to wrestling. "It was the hard work of so many people - staff, the Board, the state directors, the volunteers, the Executive Committee and others - that helped us to accomplish these things," said Baumgartner. "It is the organization, the leadership in this room, that has helped us to reach these markers." "I want to thank you for your support and I look forward to many more years working with USA Wrestling," concluded Baumgartner. The Board of Directors also elected the new slate of officers for the organization during the election portion of the meeting. Elected as First Vice-President was Jim Ravannack of Metairie, La.
