NWCA Board Selects 1999-2000 Awards Winners

The National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholastic Board have selected their National Coach, Assistant Coach, and Wrestler of the Year for 1999-2000. The Finalists were selected from eight Regional Winners. The national winners are:      NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC COACH OF THE YEAR  Jack Holloway, William Penn High School, New Castle, Delaware. Coach Holloway has been the head coach at William Penn for the past 24 years. He has compiled an overall record of 284-34-0 during his tenure. During the 99-00 season, the "Colonials" went 16-0-0 and clamed the Delaware State Championship. The 1999-2000 state title was the seventh for Coach Holloway. Jack also assists with varsity football and has been the William Penn athletic director since 1987. Coach Holloway is actively involved in all aspects of the wrestling community. He has been the NWCA Region 2 Representative for the past 6 years and served as president of the Delaware Wrestling Coaches Association from 1985-88. Jack presently serves on the Delaware Sportsmanship Committee and the Delaware Wrestling Committee. Coach Holloway is a credit to his school, his state, and our great for his dedication and commitment to the student / athletes of William Penn High School.      NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR  Dennis Miller, Kearney High School, Kearney, Nebraska. Coach Miller's involvement in the sport of wrestling is both extensive and varied. He has been actively coaching at all levels for the past 27 years from the youth club level to the elite athlete of the Junior Nationals. Dennis has served as the USAW State Chairman for the past 10 years and has directed more than 30 State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships in both AAU and USAW affiliation. He created and maintains the Nebraska USAW and Kearney High School web pages. His creative skills contributed to the design of the 1984 Olympic sing let and wrestling mascot - LA Gold. He designed the 20- foot banner that hung behind the awards stand at the Junior Nationals during a five year period. The National Wrestling Coaches Association salutes Coach Miller for his dedication and service to the sport of wrestling.      NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC WRESTLER OF THE YEAR  Jesse Jantzen, Schoreham-Wading River High School, Shoreham, New York. The highlights of Jesse Jantzen's scholastic career would take several sheets of paper and more room than available for this article. Career record of 221-3 (163 wins in a row), 46-0 his senior year. He was All-State six times and the first wrestler in New York state history to capture four titles. He finished 3rd as a 7th and 8th grader. Jesse was twice named the state tournament's Outstanding Wrestler and the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2000 National High School Championships and the 1999 NWCA Kellogg's Scholastic Duals. Jesse's strength is not just in athletics. He graduated  with a 3.2 grade point average and was a national finalist for the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. Jesse will take his talents to Massachusetts in the fall and compete for Harvard University.
