ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy wrestling head coach Bruce Burnett announced the Mids' 2002-03 schedule Wednesday, which is highlighted by a pair of dual matches against nationally-ranked opponents in Oklahoma and Lehigh. "One of the things we wanted to do with the schedule is be able to get a lot of matches for our guys before January," Burnett said. "We have some tournaments before then that will give the guys plenty of opportunities to compete. We want the guys to get experience before we go into our peaking phase which is January. That's when the level of competition really steps up on the schedule, beginning with the Lonestar Duals in Texas." Navy will open the season Nov. 8 at 10 p.m. (EST) when the Mids take on Menlo College, followed by a dual match against the host Stanford Cardinal at midnight in Palo Alto, Calif. The following day the Mids will continue their West Coast swing by grappling with UC Davis at midnight in Davis, Calif. The Mids will play host to the Navy Classic Nov. 23 in Halsey Field House, which is slated to include The Citadel, James Madison, Kent State, N.C. State, UNC Greensboro, Rutgers, Western Maryland and West Virginia. A trio of tournaments await Navy in December including the Penn State Open, the Orange Bowl Sunshine Open and the prestigious Midlands in Evanston, Ill., before traveling to the Lonestar Duals. The Mids face Missouri in their opener in Texas, followed by Northwestern and Oklahoma, which sports six wrestlers that finished the 2001-02 season ranked in the top 10 nationally. Navy will play host to Rutgers, Penn State and traditional power Lehigh in January prior to competing in the annual All-Academy Tournament Feb. 1 hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. The annual Star Match against Army is slated for Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in West Point, N.Y., where the Mids will attempt to capture their third-straight N-Star.
