Lowney, Byers Place at Pytlasinski Tournament in Poland

After a strong start, the U.S. Greco-Roman team fizzled at the Pytlasinski Tournament of Greco-Roman at Piotrkow Trybunalski, Poland this weekend. Only two wrestlers, Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., placed in the tournament.    Lowney placed fourth after going 2-2 on the second day of competition. He defeated Mirto Englich of Germany, 3-0, and Gaber Karam of Egypt, 3-0, before losing a 5-3 decision to Ramaz Nazadze of Georgia in the semifinals. Nazadze went on to win the tournament. Lowney was then pinned by Grigoros Kaustsoubas of Greece in the third and fourth-place match.    Byers escaped from pool competition with a 3-0 win over Francesco Catalatio of Italy. In the semifinals, Byers lost a 3-1 decision to eventual champion Hassan Baroev of Russia before placing third with a forfeit win over Eddy Bengtsson of Sweden.    The U.S. team competed in this top international event to kick off its preparation for the 2002 World Championships. The World Championships are in in Moscow, Russia September 18-22.    World Team coaches Andy Seras of Newtown, Conn. and Shon Lewis of Fort Carson, Colo., plus National Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo. coached the team.
