The United States had a strong start at the Pytlasinski Tournament of Greco-Roman at Piotrkow Trybunalski, Poland, as four athletes have won their preliminary pool and advanced into the championship bracket. The wrestlers who have moved past the pools are Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. Paulson, a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 2001 World silver medalist, shut down two opponents, with a 10-0 technical fall over Gregoroz Bulak of Poland and a 3-0 win over Dubrik Hamov of France. Bracken, the 2000 Olympian who won the Pytlasinski Tournament last year, received a forfeit and an injury default win to advance out of his pool. Dantzler, who has made his first U.S. World Team, dropped a 2-1 overtime match against Movees Karapeytyan of Armenia in his first match. However, Dantzler added an injury default win over Szymon Kogut of Poland to advance. Lowney, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, won a pair of low-scoring bouts, stopping Igor Isoskins of Latvia, 4-1 and Shata Narmania of Belarus, 3-0. Two wrestlers won their first match and remain alive in their pool competitions: Brad Vering (Waterloo, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Vering got by former World Champion Marko Yli-Hannuksela of Finland in his first bout. Byers stopped Jacek Fafinski of Poland, 3-0 for his first win. Those who were eliminated in their pool were Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. The U.S. team is competing in this top international event to kick off its preparation for the 2002 World Championships. The tournament features some very strong competitors and should be an excellent preview of what the U.S. team will face at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia September 18-22. World Team coaches Andy Seras of Newtown, Conn. and Shon Lewis of Fort Carson, Colo., plus National Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo. are coaching the team.
