AMES, Iowa - Former Iowa State wrestler Zach Thompson, a two-time All-American and the 2000 NCAA Championships' 197-pound runner-up, has been named assistant wrestling coach at ISU, head coach Bobby Douglas announced today. "Zach will be a welcome addition to our program," Douglas said. "He will be a great asset to the upper weights and we are very excited about Zach joining our staff." Thompson will be in his second year as a member of the Cyclone wrestling program. He was the strength and conditioning coach on last year's NCAA runner-up team that finished with a 17-5 dual record. "It's a great honor to be working under coach (Bobby) Douglas and Chris Bono," Thompson said. "I hope I can contribute as much and as well to the program as they have." Thompson wrestled at Iowa State from 1996-2001, tallying 122 career wins which ties for 11th on ISU's all-time win list with Nate Carr (1980-83). The Cleveland, Ohio, native helped pace the Cyclones to a second-place finish at the 2000 NCAA Championships with a runner-up showing of his own at 197 pounds. Thompson graduated from ISU in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies.
