INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 2, 2002) - At the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association national awards banquet July 20 in Montgomery, Alabama, several National Coaches of the Year were recognized. This year marked the first time that the winners were not announced prior to the conference and all but seven of the 23 winners were on hand to accept their awards. Wayne Branstetter of Poway (California) High School received the wrestling coach of the year award. He has led his teams to two state championships and 19 California Interscholastic Federation-San Diego Section titles in 28 years of coaching. The rest of the award winners follow: The national coach of the year for football was John Herrington of Farmington Hills (Michigan) Harrison High School. He has an overall record of 286-57, 12 state championships, and 21 conference championships in 32 years of coaching. For boys basketball, Jim Hulsman of Albuquerque (New Mexico) High School was the winner. He has racked up an overall record of 650-209, seven state championships and 18 conference championships over 33 years. The winner for boys track and field was Ralph Heiss of Wilmington (Delaware) Salesianum School. Heiss has been coaching for 21 years with an overall record of 104-39-1, winning five state championships, and has been named state coach of the year three times. The baseball winner was John Voorhies from Newport (Oregon) High School. Voorhies has an overall record of 449-205-3 during 28 years of coaching and has led his teams to 16 conference championships. The boys soccer award went to Guido Kauls from Minneapolis (Minnesota) Minnehaha Academy. Kauls has 40 years of coaching and an overall record of 499-275 under his belt, and has led his teams to eight conference championships. For boys cross country, Jerry Popp of Bowman (North Dakota) High School was honored. Popp has been coaching for 27 years, has nabbed one team state title and has coached 16 individuals to state championships. Eddie Holmes of Mobile (Alabama) U.M.S. Wright Prep School was awarded as the boys golf coach of the year. Holmes has led his teams to 15 state championships and 25 regional championships in his 32 years of coaching. In boys tennis, the honor went to Jeffrey Holman of Haddonfield (New Jersey) Memorial High School. Holman has been coaching for 24 years with an overall record of 640-123, eight state championships and 23 conference championships. Kathy McGee of Flint (Michigan) Powers Catholic High School was honored for girls basketball. McGee has an overall record of 473-127, three state championships and 14 conference championships in 25 years of coaching. In girls track and field, the honor went to Bruce Henderson of Atlantic (Iowa) High School. Henderson has 179 wins, five state championships and 20 conference championships in his 28 years of coaching. Flo Valdez of El Paso (Texas) Franklin High School was honored for volleyball. Her teams have won three state championships, 17 district championships and have racked up an overall record of 501-118. The softball award was presented to Jim Brown of Hoover (Alabama) High School. Only once during his 12 years of coaching have Brown's teams failed to win the conference championship. His teams have also won three state titles, and tallied an overall record of 641-116. Rev. Francis Kissel, SM, of Atlanta (Georgia) Marist School was honored with the award for girls tennis. Kissel has an overall record of 255-36-2, has led his teams to 10 state championships and 11 regional championships. Judy Lee of Martinsville (New Jersey) The Pingry School was announced as the field hockey coach of the year. Throughout 27 years of coaching, Lee has led her teams to an overall record of 290-126-86, one state championship, six conference championships and nine district championships. Bob Servis of Tipp City (Ohio) Tippecanoe High School was honored with the assistant coach of the year award. Servis has been coaching for 24 years, and has served as an assistant football, track, and girls and boys basketball coach, and spent 20 years as head boys soccer coach. Of the seven who could not attend the conference, Terry Berg of Lander (Wyoming) Lander Valley High School was honored with the girls golf award. During his 25-year career, he has led two teams to conference championships and two to state runner-up finishes. Berg has also led three boys teams to state championships and 11 boys teams to conference championships. For boys swimming and diving, Ken Disher of Minot (North Dakota) High School was honored. Disher has compiled a 282-29-1 record over 22 seasons. He has produced 13 state championships - three of those coming in the past five years. Phil English of Yakima (Washington) Eisenhower High School was the coach of the year in girls cross country. English has been coaching for 23 years, leading his teams to a 207-5-0 record and eight state championships. For girls soccer, the award went to Maureen McVey of St. Charles (Missouri) St. Joseph's Academy. McVey has an overall record of 291-80-30 in 16 years of coaching, and has led her teams to three state championships, all coming in the past five years. Doug Peargin of Sweet Home (Oregon) High School was honored with the award for girls swimming. Peargin has a 623-49-0 overall record while coaching girls and boys during his 28 years of coaching. He has led his boys teams to 19 conference championships and one state championship and his girls teams to 13 conference championships. John Vargas of Newport Beach (California) Corona Del Mar High School was honored with the water polo coach of the year award. Vargas has led his teams to 324 victories during his 18 years of coaching, served as the head coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, and has recently been named head coach at Stanford University. Marilyn Martin of Columbia (Missouri) West Junior High School was honored with the junior high school coach of the year award. Martin has been a volleyball and basketball coach for 27 years, compiling a record of 234-78.
