ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell head wrestling coach Rob Koll recently announced the promotion of Steve Garland to the top assistant position with the Big Red program and the addition of Derek DelPorto as the team's second assistant. Garland had served as the Big Red's part-time assistant for the past two years. He replaces Tom Shifflet, who has accepted the head position at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to joining the Cornell staff, Garland competed for three seasons at the University of Virginia, where he compiled a 93-27 career record and competed in the NCAA tournament each season. In the 2000 NCAA tournament, he reached the final at 125 pounds, upsetting top-seeded Jody Strittmatter of Iowa 9-7 in overtime along the way, and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Year. Garland won the 1997 ACC tournament and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. He competed in the NWCA All-Star meet as a senior and was named an All-American after his performance at the NCAA championships. DelPorto, a 1999 Slippery Rock University graduate, joins the Cornell staff after working as an assistant at his alma mater and at the University of Oklahoma. He was part of the staff at SRU for the 1999-2000 season before moving on to assist the Sooners from 2000-02. DelPorto was a three-time team captain, three-time NCAA Division I national qualifier and a NCAA All-American in 1999. He owns Slippery Rock's single-season record for most victories (42) and is second on the all-time career wins list with 117. Cornell finished the 2001-02 season with a 8-1 overall mark and a third-place finish at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships. A total of seven Big Red wrestlers went on to compete at the NCAA championships, with Travis Lee and Clint Wattenberg earning All-America honors.
