COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee's Bid Evaluation Task Force will determine two finalist cities for selection as the U.S. candidate city for the 2012 Olympic Games, Aug. 27 (Tuesday) at a meeting in Chicago. The announcement will be made at a planned 4 p.m. press conference at the O'Hare Hilton. The USOC's Board of Directors will select the U.S. candidate city at its meeting November 3 in Colorado Springs. Task Force chairman Charles H. Moore, a 1952 Olympic gold medalist in track and field said, "This committee has worked exceptionally hard during this important selection process and now it's time to pick two cities who will go for the honor of representing the United States in the 2012 Olympic Games." "Our charge is to pick a city with the best chance of winning the bid. We feel any of the four are among the best in the world and any of them could host these Games," Moore said. "But, the USOC will select one to be the U.S. candidate city for 2012. We feel this is an important step in identifying the two most qualified cities to compete for this honor." The International Olympic Committee will choose its host city for the 2012 Games in 2005. In the Phase II site evaluations, the USOC visited the four final cities of Washington, D.C. (June 28-29); New York City (June 30-July 1); Houston (July 12-13); and San Francisco (July 14-15). The original eight cities also included Cincinnati, Dallas, Los Angeles and Tampa. The Task Force trimmed the field to four on Oct. 26, 2001, after visits to all eight candidate cities in 2001.
