FARGO, N.D. - Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) has never been known as the most dazzling wrestler on the mat, but he has always been able get the job done, and that is just what he did on Saturday afternoon at the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D. Bono defeated Bill Zadick (Iowa City, IA/Hawkeye WC) two matches to one in a Special Wrestle-Off for the 63 kg/145.5 lb. spot on the 2002 U.S. World Freestyle Team. In the first match of the series, a 3-2 Zadick victory, all points were scored on single-leg takedowns. Zadick never trailed in the match, holding on to a 3-1 lead late in the match when Bono was able to finish a takedown with 8 seconds remaining. Bono attempted to use a leg lace, but was unable to gain the necessary leverage to score the points needed to tie or win the match. In match #2, Bono was able to get on the scoreboard first, scoring on a single-leg for a 1-0 lead. With 8 seconds remaining in the first period, though, Zadick was able to get deep on Bono and finish a shot to tie the match and seemingly gain momentum at the break. But in the second period, Bono went to work, scoring another single-leg just 15 seconds into the period, and then scoring the third point needed to win the match with 25 seconds left in the match to earn his first-ever win over Zadick and send the series to a third match. In the third and deciding match, Zadick took all momentum early, taking advantage of a par terre situation. From the top position, Zadick was able to score on a gut wrench and an ankle lace to take a 2-0 lead. Bono never panicked, though, scoring a takedown to cut the lead to 2-1 going into the second period. Bono then tied the match at 2-2 with one minute left in regulation with a takedown. Neither wrestler would score in regulation, sending the match to overtime. "I wasn't nervous when I gave up that lead, but I knew it was time to go to work again. Give him credit, he is a good wrestler. He took advantage of my mistakes, which is what you have to do at this level, but I also thought I was able to capitalize from his mistakes as well," Bono said. In the extra session, Zadick won the coin toss and had to lock first in the clinch. After a few seconds in the clinch, Zadick lost his grip, giving up the final point necessary for Bono to win. "I felt I wrestled better with each match," said Bono, who has now earned a spot on his second consecutive World Team. "I made some mistakes and learned from them throughout the course of this series, and that is why we do a best two-out-of-three series." Bono had never defeated Zadick in competition before. It was a road block he was glad to eliminate. "This is a big hurdle for me. I had never beaten him before today, so it was nice. There were some positives I can take from this, especially coming back from a 2-0 deficit like that. At this level, it is tough to dig yourself out of a hole," Bono added. In another Special Wrestle-Off, Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) was able to defeat Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind./Sunkist Kids) two matches to none. The first match went to Marano by a 5-4 score. Marano took a quick 4-0 lead after scoring a takedown in the first period and then a takedown and gut wrench in the second period. Downing came back, though, scoring a reversal and then garnering two points for cautions against Marano to tie the match at 4-4. Marano would put the first win away with one minute remaining, though, scoring a takedown on a spin-behind for the first win. Marano dominated the second match, winning by technical superiority 12-2 in 5 minutes, 26 seconds. Marano was able to throw Downing to her back twice in the match, but Marano had a scare of her own. Trailing 8-0 in the second period, Downing was able to use a front headlock to momentarily put Marano on her back, but Marano was able to fight out and earn the eventual victory. "I wasn't so much scared as I was panicked when she got me on my back. I knew at that point I had to do anything possible to get out. I would have broken my arm off to get off my back," Marano said. "I didn't want to go to a third match." The men's freestyle World Championships are set to be held in Tehran, Iran, September 4-7. The women's freestyle World Championships will take place Nov. 1-2 in Halkida, Greece.
