Black named USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year

Dave Black of River Falls, Wis. was named 2002 USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year. The award annually recognizes a USA Wrestling State Chairperson for service to the sport and to his state association.    Black has served as State Chairperson of the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation for six years, and previously served four years as the Treasurer.    Black has helped institute a system of state training sites, with 27 statewide training opportunities for young athletes. During his term, Wisconsin hired wrestling star Troy Steiner as its state clinician.    Wisconsin has been active and successful at major USA Wrestling events. The WWF has sent teams to all of the national dual meet championships, including the Kids, Cadet and Junior levels.    The state association has taken on the responsibility of running the nationally respected Northern Open tournament, after a two year period of inactivity.    Black ran a youth wrestling program in River Falls for 17 years. He created a state folkstyle championship in 1989, which  became a Wisconsin USA Wrestling event in 1991.    Wisconsin has developed a tremendous web page to promote the sport on all levels in the state.     His two sons were very successful wrestlers, Kevin and Tony, who competed for the Univ. of Wisconsin. Kevin has won NCAA All-American honors, in addition to winning four state high school titles. Tony was a two-time state champion and a runner-up. His wife Mary has been a major leader within the state association. Daughters Stephanie and Amy have also been very supportive of Black's involvement in wrestling.
