FARGO, N.D. - The largest wrestling event in the world became even larger this week as entry records were shattered at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships. In Cadet freestyle action, 1,208 wrestlers entered the tournament, but only 17 could stand at the top of the podium, and it was returning champion Dustin Schlatter (Ohio) who was recognized as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Schlatter was dominant throughout the tournament and in his finals match against Jeff Becker (Pennsylvania) at 125 lbs., whom he defeated 11-0. Schlatter recorded eight technical superiority wins throughout the tournament, and won eleven matches overall. Mike Poeta (Illinois) was the only other returning champion to capture a title this year as well, defeating Brent Metcalf (Michigan), 6-3 at 135 lbs.. Poeta used strong par terre defense to win the match, scoring two reversals while Metcalf was attempting a gut wrench. In a rematch of the 145-lb. Cadet Greco-Roman finals, Bandon Mason (Iowa) downed Rocky Cozart (Florida) with a 4-2 decision. Mason, the Greco-Roman runner-up, scored all four of his points in the first period, taking a 4-0 lead into the second period. Cozart was able to cut the lead to 4-2 with 8 seconds remaining, and was on top in par terre, but was unable to turn Mason for exposure points. Nate Matousek (Minnesota) and Kurt Brenner (Pennsylvania) captured double titles on the evening. Matousek defeated Mike Galante (New Jersey) 8-4 to capture the 152-lb. title. Matousek was able to gain control of the match early on after surrendering a 2-0 lead to Galante. Matousek was able to score on an upper body throw, an ankle lace and a gut wrench to take a 7-2 lead into the second period, where he would hang on for the win. Brenner, competing at 171 lbs., scored a takedown with less than 45 seconds remaining in the match to ice a 5-2 win over Luis Caputo (Missouri). Patrick Bond (Virginia) also captured a double national title in a 7-1 win over Phil Bomberger (Pennsylvania) at 189 lbs. An impressive Bond controlled the match from the opening whistle, scoring on a double-leg only 20 seconds into the match. He put the match away in the second period, scoring two takedowns and four points on exposure for the win. At 84 lbs., Patrick McCaffrey (Pennsylvania) defeated Cory Fish (Washington), 6-4 to halt Fish from becoming a double-champion. McCaffrey led 6-0 going into the second period before Fish began to storm back, scoring two takedowns and two exposure points in the first minute of the second to cut the lead to 6-4, but Fish had trouble attempting to finish a leg lace and had to settle for runner-up honors. Greco-Roman champion Nick Gallick (Arizona) also attempted to win his second national title of the week, but was denied by Mike Grey (New Jersey) in a 4-2 loss. Grey was able to neutralize Gallick while on their feet, shutting down Gallick's potent offensive attack. The turning point in the match was in the second period, when after a mad scramble, Grey was able to come away with a takedown and a 4-2 lead. Jayson Ness (Minnesota) held off Matt Fisk (Pennsylvania) to capture the 105-lb. national title. Fisk took an early 4-0 lead with a three-point hip toss and another exposure points, giving him the early advantage. But Ness continued to battle back, scoring a takedown and gut wrench immediately after the start of the second period to cut the lead to 4-3. After Fisk scored a two-point reversal to extend his lead to 6-3, Ness took control. He scored a reversal, a two-point gut wrench and a two-point reversal with only 20 seconds remaining for the win. At 112 lbs., Garrett Scott (Pennsylvania) defeated Michael Rowe (Maryland), 12-7 for his first Cadet freestyle title. Scott took a 4-1 lead after the first period, but had to rely on two late tilts to extend his lead to 12-5 before coming away with the victory. In the 119-lb. final, Cameron Doggett (Ohio) scored an overtime takedown after a scramble to defeat Mitch Mueller (Iowa), 6-5. Mueller led the match 5-2 after the first period, but Doggett scored three takedowns, the final one with 20 seconds left in regulation, to tie the match and send it to overtime before his dramatic win.
