The largest Cadet National freestyle tournament of USA Wrestling history completed its second day, with only a handful of wrestlers still in contention for All-American honors. Each weight class has been whittled down to a few participants in each pool, truly the cream of the crop in the nation. Athletes who are 15 and 16 years old are eligible for the Cadet level. A record 1,208 Cadet freestyle wrestlers are entered in this year's event. Editor's note: This story is an update from a previous story, as one additional round of results was provided after the previous filing. Five returning Cadet Freestyle National champions are still the hunt for a second straight Cadet National freestyle title. Three have already lost a match, but it takes two losses to eliminate a wrestler from gold-medal contention in this international pairing system. There are two returning freestyle champions at 105 pounds this year, and it is possible that both my miss the finals this year. Ryan Adams of Minnesota and Anthony Easter of West Virginia are both in the 105A pool. Both Adams and Easter have 6-1 records in the tournament. Adams was dominant, winning his first six matches by technical fall. However, Adams lost to New York sensation Troy Nickerson, the 2002 Greco-Roman champion, in the seventh round, 5-2. Easter was also unbeaten after six rounds, but dropped a 8-5 bout to Shawn Jones of Idaho in his last bout of the day. It is still possible that Adams and Easter may be able to qualify for the finals, but only if they are able to win the roundrobin in their pool. Returning freestyle champion Mike Bizzle of Oklahoma is competing at 98 pounds, and for the second straight event has a tremendously loaded pool. In the Greco-Roman event completed on Tuesday, Bizzle was defeated in the pool competition by Nick Gallick of Arizona, 3-1. Gallick went on to win the gold medal, and Bizzle placed fourth. Gallick and Bizzle are again in the same pool in the freestyle event, pool 98A. Bizzle was unbeaten until the sixth round, when he dropped a 4-2 overtime match to Paul Ruiz of California. Gallick is also without a loss, with six straight wins. Dustin Schlatter of Ohio, another returning champion, has won seven straight bouts at 125 pounds. Included are five technical falls, a pin and a decision. Schlatter was pushed hard in a 3-1 win over Daniel LeClere of Iowa in the fourth round, but LeClere is now out of the competition Michael Poeta of Illinois, another returning champion, is going strong at 135 pounds, with seven straight wins. Included in his total are four technical falls.
