Rowlands places fourth in Oleg Naniev Championship in Russia, July 20-22

Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Dave Schultz WC) placed fourth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., the top U.S. performance at the Oleg Naniev Championship, held in Vladikavkas, Russia, July 20-22. The tournament featured some of the top freestyle wrestlers in the world.    Rowlands won his pool competition to advance to the medal rounds. He was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual champion from Turkey, 8-1, then lost in the bronze-medal match, 4-1, to an athlete from Georgia.    Rowlands placed second in the 2002 World Team Trials, to earn a No. 2 ranking on Freestyle Team USA. He was the NCAA Div. I champion at heavyweight this year for Ohio State Univ.    Three U.S. wrestlers won their pool competition to advance to medal contention: Rowlands, plus Doug Schwab (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Charles Burton (Bloomington, Ind./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.    Burton captured fifth in the tournament, losing a tight 4-3 decision to a Russian opponent in the quarterfinals. Burton was fifth in the 2000 Olympic Games for the United States.    Schwab placed eighth in the competition, losing a 3-0 decision in the quarterfinals to a Russian opponent.    Coaching the team was Joe Seay of Perry, Okla. and Steven Barrett of Moscow, Russia. Seay was head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, as well as the 1993 and 1995 U.S. World Teams which claimed World Team titles.    More information will be posted when available.
