A total of 23 states will be represented at the 2002 National Cadet Dual Meet Championships in Greeley, Colo. The event will take place July 4-6 at the University of Northern Colorado's Butler Hancock Hall. The format is a dual meet tournament with state teams competing head-to-head for team honors. This is the third year for this event, which grows in size and prestige each year. Teams are comprised of up to 25 members and are placed in pools based on seeding determined by the US Wrestling Kids/Cadet Council. Only wrestlers born in 1986-1987 (ages 15-16) are eligible to compete in the Cadet division. All participating teams have been approved and certified by a USAW State Chairperson. Competition will include both Olympic styles (freestyle and Greco-Roman), and involve the 16 Cadet weight classes: 84 lbs., 91 lbs., 98 lbs., 105 lbs., 112 lbs., 119 lbs., 125 lbs., 130 lbs., 135 lbs., 140 lbs., 152 lbs., 160 lbs., 171 lbs., 189 lbs., 215 lbs., 275 lbs. There will be eight national team plaques awarded to the first through eighth placing teams in both styles. A consolation bracket trophy will also be awarded. A team from Minnesota captured the titles for both styles last year and will return to defend this year. Other participating states include: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. The National Cadet Duals provide an opportunity for individuals to obtain greater exposure to national caliber competition prior to the individual Cadet and Junior National Championships, which will be held July 18-27 in Fargo, North Dakota. Many of the nation's best young high school wrestlers will be in action this weekend. According to Pete Isais, Director of National Events at USA Wrestling, "This should be a great event. A record number of teams have entered this year, which means more opportunities for the wrestlers to compete and gain experience."
