Three of the nation's top high school seniors, Mark Moos (119) of Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward High, Teyon Ware (135) of Edmond (Okla.) North High, and Zack Esposito (152) of Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy earned repeat selections to the 17th annual Asics Tiger All-America Wrestling Team, which was announced today. The Asics Tiger All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers completing all four high-school grades are eligible. Asics Tiger is the title sponsor of USA Wrestling's Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels. "This team represents the best of the best in our schools today," said Neil Duncan, president of TW Promotions. "We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the world and Olympic champions of the future." Members of the First Team, as well as the Asics Tiger Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the Asics/Vaughan Junior National Freestyle Championships July 27 at Fargo, N.D. Powerful Blair Academy, the nation's top high school team this past year, placed three wrestlers on the First Team for the second consecutive year. Fellow seniors Matt Palmer (171) and Kurt Backes (215) joined Esposito on the First Team. Juniors Ryan Davis (140) and Mark Perry (145) were Honorable Mention selections, giving the Bucs five spots on the squad. Chesapeake (Va.) Great Bridge High had four overall selections, while Apple Valley (Minn.) High, Bakersfield (Calif.) High, and Davison (Mich.) High each had three. Three Ohio wrestlers also were named to the First Team. In addition to Moos, Matt McIntire (140) of West Chester Lakota West High and Hetag Pliev (189) of Liberty Township Lakota East High were honored. Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania each had two First Team selections. Ware and Johnny Hendricks (160) of crosstown Edmond Memorial High earned First Team honors for Oklahoma, while Matt Ciasulli (125) of Easton High and Brian Baglio (130) of Lewisberry Red Land High were Pennsylvania's selections. Rounding out the First Team are Gabriel Mooney (103) of Greenbush (Minn.) Greenbush-Middle River/Badger High; Mack Reiter (112) of Gilbertville (Iowa) Don Bosco High, Brian Stith (145) of Virginia Beach (Va.) Frank Cox High; and Cole Konrad (275) of Freedom (Wis.) High. The Asics Tiger All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes - the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. On paper, this year's First Team is one of the most interesting in recent memory. The 14 First Team members combined to post 32 state high school or National Prep championships - 10 fewer than the 2001 First Team and one of the lowest combined totals in recent years - but own nine Cadet National and six Junior National titles. Ware is the only four-time high school state champion on the First Team, and three First Team members won their high school state tournament just once. But this year's overall team may be the best ever in terms of depth. The Second and Third Teams have two four-time state champions each, and the Third Team members actually posted the most state titles overall, with 33 (the Second Team members combined for 31). Four-time state champions Darrell Vasquez (125) of Bakersfield (Calif.) High and Andy Simmons (140) of Williamston (Mich.) High headline the Second Team, while Matt Smith (125) of Plaistow (N.H.) Timberlane High, also the first four-time New England champion, and Todd Meneely (140) of Omaha (Neb.) Skutt Catholic High are four-time champions on the Third Team. Possibly the deepest Honorable Mention group in history includes 12 four-time champions and 15 three-time champions. Six of the eight selections at 125 pounds were four-time state champions, as were four of the 135-pound selections. Pennsylvania placed 13 wrestlers on the overall squad to lead all states, followed by Ohio (12) and New Jersey (10). Also well represented were California and Virginia (seven), Illinois, Iowa, and Oklahoma (six), and Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin (five). The 112 wrestlers selected come from 27 states. 2002 Asics Tiger High School All-American Team First Team 103 - Gabriel Mooney, sophomore, Greenbush HS, Greenbush, MN* 112 - Mack Reiter, junior, Don Bosco HS, Gilbertville, IA 119 - Mark Moos, senior, St. Edward HS, Lakewood, OH* 125 - Matt Ciasulli, senior, Easton HS, Easton, PA* 130 - Brian Baglio, senior, Red Land HS, Lewisberry, PA 135 - Teyon Ware, senior, Edmond North HS, Edmond, OK* 140 - Matt McIntire, senior, Lakota West HS, West Chester, OH 145 - Brian Stith, senior, Frank Cox HS, Virginia Beach, VA 152 - Zack Esposito, senior, Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ* 160 - Johnny Hendricks, senior, Edmond Memorial HS, Edmond, OK* 171 - Matt Palmer, senior, Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ 189 - Hetag Pliev, senior, Lakota East HS, Liberty Township, OH* 215 - Kurt Backes, senior, Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ* HWT - Cole Konrad, senior, Freedom HS, Freedom, WI Second Team 103 - Coleman Scott, sophomore, Waynesburg HS, Waynesburg, PA 112 - Jeremy Hartrum, senior, Wilson Area HS, Easton, PA 119 - Matt Valenti, senior, Kittatinny HS, Newton, NJ 125 - Darrell Vasquez, senior, Bakersfield HS, Bakersfield, CA* 130 - Alex Tsirtsis, sophomore, Griffith HS, Griffith, IN 135 - C.P.
