SMALLEY WINS GOLD, MONTGOMERY, KELLY WIN SILVERS AT FILA JUNIOR WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NANTES, FRANCE, JULY 6 Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC) claimed a gold medal at 165.25 pounds, the top U.S. performance at the FILA Junior Women's World Championships in Nantes, France, July 6. The Junior World Championships features athletes ages 17 to 20 years old (born between 1980-1983). Two U.S. teammates claimed silver medals in the competition: Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./unattached) at 94.5 pounds and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 149.75 pounds. The three medalists helped lead the United States to a third place team finish, behind champion Russia and runner-up Japan. Smalley defeated Kamila Zgolak of Poland in the gold-medal finals, 4-1 and completed the tournament with a 5-1 record. Smalley lost her first match of the tournament to Anna Kotchberg of Russian, 7-6 in overtime, but battled back through a wrestle-back format with three straight wins to qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, she defeated Katarina Halova of the Czech Republic, 4-1. Smalley is currently ranked No. 2 in the United States on the Senior level and trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kelly, a 1999 Cadet World Champion, won her pool competition, scoring technical fall victories over Audrey Carrasco of Canada, 10-0 and Sabior Mia Shumel of India, 14-3. In the semifinals, Kelly pinned Sera Momoko of Japan in 4:33. In the gold-medal finals, she dropped a wild match against Sara Ehinger of Germany. Kelly trailed in the last seconds, 11-9, and was pinned at the 5:59 mark. Like Smalley, Montgomery dropped her first match to a Russian opponent, losing by pin to Natalie Garilova. Montgomery rebounded with three straight wins. In the semifinals, she pinned veteran Heidi Skemark of Sweden in 3:52. In the gold-medal finals, Montgomery was defeated by Anita Schatzle of Germany, 14-7. Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) won three matches during the tournament at 138.75 pounds and finished fifth. She won her first two matches against talented veterans, beating Lotta Anderson of Sweden, 6-4 and Tara Hedican of Canada, 11-3. After losses to Ayako Shoda of Japan and Monika Michalik of Polant, McMann closed with a pin over Audrey Prieto of France. Placing sixth for the United States were Melina Hutchinson (Soldotna, Alaska/Alaska WC) at 110 pounds, Erin Tomeo (Volant, Pa./TAPS) a 119 pounds and Carrie Birge (Aurora, Colo./Viking WC) at 127.75 pounds. Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Viking WC) placed eighth at 101.25 pounds.
