The University of Dubuque announces the appointment of Jon McGovern as Head Wrestling Coach. McGovern was a 1998 US National Team Member and finished fourth in the 2000 Olympic Trials. During his collegiate career he was a two-time NCAA Champion and three-time NCAA All-American and was named outstanding wrestler of the 1992 Iowa Conference Tournament. He competed for four years with the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club - from 1996-2000 - placing third in the 1998 US Nationals and third in the World Team Trials. A three-time IIAC Champion, he was inducted in to Division III in 1998. Upon his appointment McGovern commented, "I am excited about the opportunity to build a strong wrestling program at the University of Dubuque. Wrestling in the Iowa Conference has a strong tradition. There is no better place for a wrestler who is serious about academics and athletics to compete." Prior to coming to the University of Dubuque, McGovern served as assistant coach at the University of Virginia in 1997 and helped lead the Cavaliers to a second-place finish at the ACC Championships, while qualifying a school-record seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. McGovern earned his B.A. degree in Education from Central College in 1992, and completed his M.A. degree in Special Education from the University of Iowa in 1996.
