One of the most consistent wrestlers on the U.S. scene in recent years has been Keith Sieracki of the U.S. Army, who won his third career U.S. Nationals title in April. Sieracki made his first U.S. World Team in 2001, after many years as a top challenger in his weight division. Many fans will remember Sieracki for his ordeal in 2000, when the position on the U.S. Olympic Team was decided in the courts in favor of Matt Lindland. Sieracki is respected by his peers for his skill and ability to compete well under pressure. Sieracki can be very exciting to watch, throwing some opponents with his powerful lift. He can also pummel forever, and win the close matches. In the U.S. Nationals finals, he stopped regular rival T.C. Dantzler of the New York AC, 4-1. Dantzler has also been tremendous in recent seasons, competing well almost every time he wrestles. However, Dantzler has not been able to get past Sieracki, who seems to know how to stop Dantzler from opening up his explosive offense. It was Sieracki against Dantzler in last year's World Team Trials finals, and many believe that could be the pairing again this season. Placing third at the U.S. Nationals is young Darryl Christian of the Dave Schultz WC, who is a USOTC resident athlete and has improved dramatically. He edged fourth-place Tom Ciezki of the Wildcat WC in the bronze-medal match in Las Vegas, 4-3. Ciezki is also a young up-and-comer, with a successful age-group career in Greco-Roman. Heath Sims of the Dave Schultz WC was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team, and is always a serious threat to win. He beat Dantzler at the 2002 Dave Schultz International, but was defeated handily by Sieracki in the finals. Sims has had his best success competing at the old 152-pound class, but has the size and experience to win at this new weight class, too. The U.S. Marine Corps has a number of talented athletes in this weight class, with Keith Barkers, Joey Clark and Brian Van Hoven all placing for the Marines at the 2002 U.S. Nationals. Van Hoven may have had the most success in this trio of talents. Barkers has paid his dues for a number of years and is always competitive. Clark might be the one with the brightest future. All three have yet to break into the top echelon at this division. The Marines will have another athlete in this weight class in Saint Paul, Jess Hargrave, who medalled at an international tournament to qualify. The 2002 University Nationals champion was Pat Cadwallader, who competes for NAIA Embry Riddle University and who became a talented Greco-Roman prospect by training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Regional Champion Jason Nunn of the USOEC program at Northern Michigan is also in the field, and is looking to make a breakthrough. Past World and Olympic team member David Zuniga competed at a recent Regional event, and could be a tough draw for anybody if he chooses to enter the World Team Trials this year. The NCAA finalists from this year are eligible, but this year's group at this weight have not done much Greco-Roman. With Keith Sieracki wrestling very well, it will take a strong performance to beat him out for the U.S. World Team. Nobody would like to get the job done more than T.C. Dantzler, who has not yet been able to solve Sieracki's puzzle in recent seasons. At his best, Dantzler has the ability to tear through the field at the Challenge Tournament. One of the other qualifiers will have to put together a good weekend if they hope to get by Dantzler for the right to test Sieracki in Saint Paul. 74 kg/163 lbs. qualifiers National champion - Keith Sieracki, Fort Carson, Colo.
