Ware receives National Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award

Teyon Ware of Edmond North High School in Oklahoma was named as the national winner of the 2002 Dave Schultz High School Excellence award. His selection was announced at the Honors Banquet of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla., June 8. Ware was selected for the national honor from five Dave Schultz High School Excellence award winners on the Regional level. The award is based equally on outstanding wrestling achievement, scholastic achievement and citizenship. Ware is a four-time undefeated Oklahoma State champion. He is a two-time Junior National champion in freestyle and a three-time All-American. He was twice named Outstanding Wrestler at the Oklahoma State high school tournament. He has been named All-City Wrestler of the Year twice, and is on the All-State Wrestling Team. In 2001, he was a First Team member of the ASICS High School All-American Wrestling Team. This spring, Wrestling USA magazine named him to the "Dream Team" and awarded him the award as the nation's best wrestler. Ware was also on the All-District football team, and was second team All-State in football. He was named co-offensive Player of the Year for the Metro Conference. Teyon was named Student of the Year three times and was Homecoming King for Edmond North. He is active in his community serving as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Summer Inner City Camp Leader, and is also active in Mission in Training. Ware will attend the University of Oklahoma on a wrestling scholarship next year. Ware became eligible for the national award by winning the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for the Southern Plains region. The other Regional winners who received their awards during the banquet were Zach Esposito of Blair Academy in New Jersey (Northeast), Michael Martin of Great Bridge High School in Virginia (Southeast), Jeff Pfaffinger of Blue Earth Area High School in Minnesota (Northern Plains) and Darrell Vasquez of Bakersfield High School in California (West). This year's awards were presented by Rich Bender, the Executive Director of USA Wrestling.
