Cael Sanderson Nominated For Three ESPY Awards

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State wrestler Cal Sanderson, the first undefeated four-time national champion in collegiate history, has been nominated in three categories for the 10th Annual ESPY Awards, which will be held July 10 at 8 p.m. CST from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Calif. Sanderson, who completed a 159-0 collegiate career with his fourth national title in March, is nominated in three categories including best male athlete, best record-breaking performance and best male college athlete. Sanderson joins Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, Jennifer Capriati, Sarah Hughes and Annika Sorenstam as individuals receiving multiple nominations. Joining Sanderson, the 2002 U.S. Open freestyle 184-pound champion, as nominees for best male athlete are: Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Shaquille O'Neal and Tiger Woods. Sanderson is one of four individuals nominated in the best record-breaking performance catagory along with Bond's breaking of Mark McGwire's major league home run record, Annika Sorenstam's record-breaking 18-hole total of 59 at the 2001 Standard Register PING and Tiger Woods' streak of four straight major PGA tournament victories. In addition to Sanderson, who will compete next at the World Team Trials, June 21-23 in St. Paul, Minn., the nominees for best male college athlete are: Shane Battier, Eric Crouch, Juan Dixon and Jayson Williams.
