Greensboro, N.C. - UNCG Director of Athletics Nelson Bobb announced Friday that Tom Shifflet, an assistant with Cornell University the past five years, has been named the Spartans head wrestling coach. "When we began our national search for a wrestling coach, we looked for the best possible candidate and I feel that we have found that person in Tom Shifflet," said Bobb. "He has competed, as both an athlete and coach, at the highest level of wrestling in this country. His commitment, desire and positive attitude will bring a renewed energy and excitement to our wrestling program." Shifflet joins UNCG after five successful seasons as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cornell. In his tenure with the Big Red, Shifflet coached 24 NCAA qualifiers, three NCAA All-Americans and helped Cornell to a pair of Ivy League championships (1999 and 2001). The Big Red was also consistently ranked among the nation's top-15 programs. Shifflet was instrumental with the success of their student-athletes off the mat as well. Cornell's wrestling squad carried a 3.1 grade point average this past fall, which ranked eighth nationally and earned National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team. He also played an important role in fundraising. In his time, Cornell consistently raised $100,000 annually for the program. Shifflet assisted with the campaign of six million dollars through alumni relations to completely endow the wrestling program, including the soon to be completed state-of-the-art wrestling only facility. "I am very excited about the opportunity here at UNCG and with this wrestling program," said Shifflet. "Wrestling is my passion and this move has been a goal of mine since finishing my wrestling career at Edinboro University. It is clear that this administration is committed to winning." As a student-athlete, Shifflet was a four-time national qualifier, three-time All-American and registered 118 career wins at for national powerhouse Edinboro University from 1992-95. Competing at 142-pounds, he finished seventh at nationals as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore and third as a senior. Shifflet earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education in 1995. After his wrestling career at Edinboro, Shifflet placed sixth at 152-pounds at the 1997 U.S. Open freestyle championships and then finished sixth at the 1997 World Trials. He also qualified for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials. Prior to his stint at Cornell, Shifflet spent two years as an assistant coach at Georgia State. A native of Amherst, N.Y., Shifflet replaces Denny Moore, whose contract was not renewed. Moore compiled a 57-58-2 record in nine seasons with the Spartans, including two Southern Conference championships.
