USA Wrestling's Kids/Cadet Regional Championships get underway this weekend as the top youth wrestlers in the nation compete in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. There are six Kids/Cadet Regional events where participants qualified through their USA Wrestling state tournaments. The regional tournaments will begin in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 24 with the Southeast Kids/Cadet Regional Championships and wrap up with the Western Kids/Cadet Regional Championships June 17-22 in Butte, Mont. Five of the regional championships will also host a Girls Festival open to Schoolgirl (born 1988-1989) and FILA Cadet Women (born 1985-1987) ages. The Southeast, Central, Northeast, Northern Plains and Southern Plains Regionals will all host Girls Festivals, which are open to all girls regardless of the state they compete in. "We are coming up on some of the last national events for these kids," said Mark Scott, USA Wrestling Director of State Services. "All of these kids in these tournaments are highly competitive. It is important for them to compete in these regionals against some of the top kids in the nation. Some regionals carry as many as 13 states in them." The top three place winners at each weight in each regional at the Cadet level will be added to their state lineup for the ADVOCARE Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D., July 20-27. Historically, many of the stars from USA Wrestling's national youth events have gone on to major success at the high school, college and international levels. The Sixth Annual Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships are slated for July 2-6 in Enid, Okla. To be eligible to participate in this event, wrestlers must have competed in at least one style of wrestling at their 2002 USA Wrestling Kids Regional Tournament. A wrestler may compete in both styles at Kids Nationals even though only having competed in one style at a regional tournament.
