May 20, 2002 - Three-time NCAA Finalist Joe Heskett has accepted a position as an assistant coach at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Heskett, who competed at Iowa State from 1997-2002, will be joined by former Cyclone teammate Matt Azevedo at Cal Poly. "I went there for a lot of reasons," Heskett said this morning from his grandmother's home in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. "It's a beautiful place and I was really excited to start with a program with a lot of potential." Heskett also plans to begin work towards a Master's degree in Athletic Administration/Business. Heskett won his first NCAA title in 2002 at 165 pounds for Iowa State. Before that, he had been the NCAA runner-up as a sophomore and junior. He placed third as a freshman. He is one of only nine wrestlers in Cyclone history to become a four-time All-American. Heskett completed his collegiate career with a 143-9 record, including 58 pins. His 143 wins are good for third on the Iowa State all time win list. "The support outside of the program to get it to be a top 10 or top 5 program in the next couple of years was a big draw for me," Heskett added. "With Coach Azevedo, there is a lot of enthusiasm about building the program. We have great recruits coming in here and it is just an attractive situation overall." Cal Poly assistant coach John Azevedo played a large role in bringing Heskett to the program, and is excited about the possibilities for his team. "This let's our wrestlers know that we are serious about building this program. Joe has a huge name in wrestling and is respected as a person and as a wrestler," he stated. Also joining the staff will be Azevedo's nephew, Matt, who will work as a Graduate Assistant. Matt Azevedo wrestled at Iowa State from 1999-2001. He was a two-time NCAA qualifier. He received his bachelor's degree in Sociology from Iowa State in 2001. "Both of these individuals are going to help bring intensity to the wrestling room," John Azevedo said. Azevedo also added that hiring Heskett will help the school in recruiting outside of California. "We don't go out of state that much, and that is something we will definitely do in the future. We have good light weight coaches here with the addition of Matt, but Joe is going to help draw the bigger kids." Heskett and Azevedo will begin their positions in September.
