USA Wrestling has hired Momir Petkovic of Clifton, N.J. as its Assistant National Greco-Roman Coach. Petkovic has moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. to work with USA Wrestling's National Coaching staff. He will assist in the training and recruitment of athletes for the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete program. He will also work on a variety of Greco-Roman National Team projects. Petkovic was a 1976 Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, competing for the former Yugoslavia at 180.5 pounds. He also claimed three World silver medals (1978, 1979, 1981) and a World bronze medal (1977) during his career. Petkovic placed fourth in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif. His competitive international Greco-Roman career spanned from 1970-1984. "I am very excited about having Momir as a part of our staff," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "Already, in his first week in Colorado Springs, we have had some great workouts. We have a great team with Momir and Anatoly Petrosyan in our resident workout room. As National Coach, I'm fired up about having Momir on our team." "He's an Olympic Champion," said Fraser. "He brings a great amount of experience as a former athlete, but he is also a great coach. He relates well to the athletes. He is inspiring and is very good in all aspects of coaching. With him on our national coaching team, I believe that Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States will take another step up in the future." He has lived in the United States since 1986, when he moved here with his family. He worked for Levine Industries in New Jersey in a number of capacities, a company owned by Ted Levine, a former wrestler who is a member of USA Wrestling's All-American Club. Petkovic has served as a club coach for the New York Athletic Club for the past six years. He has worked with a number of top NYAC Greco-Roman athletes, including 2000 Olympian Kevin Bracken. In addition, he has worked with many other top U.S. athletes at training camps and on international teams. Petkovic was a member of the 2000 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team coaching staff, as well as the 2001 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Coaching staff. The United States placed a strong third at both competitions, among the best Greco-Roman team performances in U.S. history. He was able to assist at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Training Camp in Big Bear, Calif., and also helped prepare the 1991 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team. "I love the sport," said Petkovic. "I believe love is a big part of everything I did as an athlete and as a coach in wrestling." "I work well with (National Greco-Roman Coach) Steve Fraser," he said. "We have the same philosophy. My goal is to help U.S. wrestling become the best in the world. The last two years, we had great performances. We have some tough athletes in our resident program. I truly believe we can be the best in the world. It is great to be here and to be a part of this program." Petkovic and his wife have two grown children, son Sasha and daughter Irona.
