COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - - The United States Olympic Committee has selected Sara Levin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nathaniel Mills (Washington, D.C.) to attend the 42nd International Session for Young Participants of the International Olympic Academy (IOA) July 24 - August 8, 2002. Additionally, USOC Executive Committee member Herb Perez (San Francisco, Calif.) has been chosen to attend the IOA's 6th International Session for Officials of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and Presidents and Directors of National Olympic Academies (NOAs) scheduled for June 30-July 7, 2002. The IOA brings together a diverse group of students, Olympic athletes and others involved in sports, educators, and individuals active in their respective NOC or NOA. In 1927, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic Games, gave birth to the idea of founding an institution devoted to the study of Olympism. In 1961, the Hellenic Olympic Committee acquired a plot of land at Olympia, Greece, on which the embryonic IOA was built. The present Academy stands there today and continues to teach the history of the Olympic Games and to propagate the ideals of peace and brotherhood. The multicultural environment enhances international understanding and acceptance, and forges lifelong friendships among the participants. Levin, Manager of Marketing and Promotions for USA Wrestling, is a graduate of Indiana University, where she majored in sport marketing and management. The Maryland Heights, Mo. native is a member of the United States Wrestling Officials Association and a former member of USA Gymnastics. Mills, a former national champion and national record holder in the sport of speedskating, competed in the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Olympic Winter Games. A peace studies teacher for the District of Columbia and an attorney, Mills earned a Bachelor of Science degree in theater at Northwestern University and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Mills currently represents speedskating on the USOC Athletes' Advisory Council (AAC). A taekwondo gold medalist at the 1992 Olympic Games, Perez is a seven-time national champion and two-time national collegiate champion. He earned a silver medal (1991) and a gold medal (1987) at the Pan American Games, was World silver medalist in 1991 and 1987, and was a gold medalist at the 1987 World Cup and the 1986 Olympic Sports Festival. Perez, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from William Paterson College and a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers Law School, is owner and president of Gold Medal Productions, a full service video and film production house, and serves as an AAC representative to the USOC Executive Committee.
