Evanston, Ill.- The first round of freestyle competition got underway Friday evening at the 2002 University Nationals and FILA Cadet Nationals. Four of the six eligible returning champions have come back to compete again - and all four remain alive in the championship bracket. Sal Gonzales (Fresno State), 50 kg, and Andy Bowlby (Orange Crush), 120 kg, have not yet competed in their respective weight classes, but NCAA All-American Chris Fleeger (OSWC) rolled through his first match of the tournament, defeating Paul Collum (Northeast Elite) 12-0 at 60 kg. Fleeger will meet up next with Adam Heyde (So. PAC) for a quarterfinal spot. The other returning champion, Andy Hrovat (Cliff Keen WC), also had no trouble in the first session at 74 kg. He won by technical fall over David Bolyard (Central Michigan) before pinning Jeremy Larson (Minnesota Storm) in the first period. Hrovat will meet Nathan McMillin (Dave Schultz WC) for a spot in the quarterfinals. Hrovat's college teammate at Michigan, A.J. Grant (Cliff Keen WC), was impressive as well. He escaped with a 5-3 win over Jesse Leng (Unatt.), using a 4-0 first-period cushion in coasting to the win. Harry Lester (Cyclone WC) and Chris Nedens (Dave Schultz WC), two of the top young wrestlers in the nation, marched their way to the third round at 66 kg, but they will now have to meet each other in what should be an electrifying match. 60 kg is also loaded with young talent. Shawn Bunch (Dave Schultz WC) advanced at 60 kg with a 10-0 technical fall over Matthew Pitts (Tenn-Chattanooga). Bunch will meet Tommy Vargas (Wildcat WC) in the next round. Also at 60 kg, Justin Spates (Dave Schultz WC), who redshirted at Missouri last season, pinned Tyson Shatto (Wyoming) to move on in the bracket. Scott Owen (Northern Illinois), fresh off his fifth-place finish at the NCAA Tournament, pinned Blaine Vanderhey (Orange Crush) in the first round and defeated Luke Larwin (Oregon) 7-1 in the second round at 74 kg. He will meet up with Justin Giovinco (Pittsburgh), who used a pin and technical fall to advance. This promises to be an exciting match. At 84 kg, Willie Parks (Northeast Elite) escaped with a technical fall win over Ryan Jantzen (Binghamton). Parks strained his medial collateral ligament (MCL) just as he scored a takedown for the technical fall. He plans to compete on Saturday morning. There were no surprises in FILA Cadet action either. At 50 kg, Cesar Grajales (Florida) advanced with a 10-0 technical fall. At 54 kg, Dustin Schlatter (Ohio) used an 11-0 technical fall over Brandon Haman (Montana) to move on to the next round. At 58 kg, Angel Cejudo (Arizona), a FILA Cadet Greco-Roman champion earlier in the day, moved on with a first-period pin and a technical fall. The deepest weight in the Cadet division seemed to be 63 kg, though. In the half of the bracket, Eric Tannenbaum (Illinois) moved on with an 11-0 technical fall over Matt Kocher (Pennsylvania). In the bottom half of the bracket, Alex Tsirtsis (Indiana) used wins of 10-0 and 10-4 to advance. Brent Metcalf (Michigan), a FILA Cadet Greco-Roman champion, also moved on with 11-1 and 9-3 wins. He is one match away from facing off with Jacob Naig (Iowa), who moved on with a 12-0 technical fall. Women's Freestyle competition will get underway on Saturday morning at 9:00 am (Central Time). Men's Freestyle will continue at the same time. Stay logged in to TheMat.com for complete coverage.
