After canceling the planned broadcast of the 2001 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in March, the CBC has informed the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association that the one-hour highlight show will be aired on Saturday, May 4th at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The reason for the March broadcast cancellation was that there were specific matches involving Canadian wrestlers missing from the video provided to CBC by the event broadcaster. This was only determined when the final editing was being done and, as a result, CBC had to go back to the broadcaster and obtain specific video footage. The 2001 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria saw two World Champion performances by Christine Nordhagen-Vierling (Calgary) and Guivi Sissaouri (Montréal) and a silver medal performance by Carol Huynh (Vancouver). Matches featuring these wrestlers and other international performers will be included in the show. Also on CBC, the 5th World University Wrestling Championships (being held in Edmonton from June 21-25, 2002) will be shown on Saturday, June 30th with a planned 90-minute highlight show. Look for more specific information on this broadcast on the CAWA website and in CAWA E-News.
