Ames, Iowa, May 1, 2002 - Even in wrestling to a perfect college wrestling career, Cael Sanderson never had to face a decision as monumental as where he plans to coach. Today, Sanderson confirmed that he would be staying at Iowa State for the immediate future. Sanderson will take on a role as an assistant to Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde in a public and athlete relations role. The decision will be announced at an 11 am press conference today in Ames. "My new role at Iowa State will help give me a chance to concentrate solely on training for the World Team Trials," Sanderson stated. "I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life and career, and am glad that this process is now out of the way." Sanderson considered offers from Northern Iowa, Michigan and Pennsylvania before making his final decision to stay at Iowa State. "I want to thank the other schools for their interest in my future and in my career, but I just felt that Iowa State is the place I need to be right now. I have accomplished so much here with the help of many of these people. This could be my chance to help pay them back," he said. Sanderson completed this season as the first four-time undefeated NCAA Champion. He finished his career with an amazing 159-0 record. Only four of his matches in his senior season last the entire seven minutes. He recorded 23 pins and 11 technical falls. He was awarded with his third Dan Hodge Trophy, the top award in amateur wrestling. He is the only amateur wrestler to win the award multiple times. Last season, Sanderson earned a spot on the U.S. Freestyle World Team, but forfeited his opportunity to compete at the World Championships after the event slated for New York City was postponed due to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The postponed date coincided with his collegiate season. This season, he once again earned the top seed at the U.S. World Team Trials by winning the U.S. National Freestyle Championships last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. The World Team Trials are set to take place June 21-23 in St. Paul, Minn. "I am looking forward to now focusing on my wrestling goals," Sanderson said. "A lot of things have happened in the past two months, but this should bring an end to a lot of speculation since the season ended, and I can pursue my dreams of becoming a gold medalist." Sanderson, a four-time Utah state champion in high school, is the younger brother of former Iowa State wrestlers Cole and Cody Sanderson and is the son of Steve and Debbie Sanderson. His younger brother, Cyler, recently won his first Utah high school state title. He will marry Kelly Kinnard on May 11.
