University Park, Pa., April 19, 2002 - Penn State head wrestling coach Troy Sunderland today announced the addition of Cory Garis (Easton, Pa.) and Aaron Anspach (Columbia, Pa.) to the Lion's 2002 recruiting class. Many publications already had Penn State's class ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation following the early signing period. The two are the first of a few additions Sunderland hopes to secure during the late signing period that started April 10. Garis, projected as a 125/133-pounder at Penn State, was a four-year starter at Wilson Area High School where he compiled a career record of 131-33 with 37 pins. He won a PIAA Class AA State Championship at 125 pounds and helped lead his team to the state class AA team title in his senior campaign while posting a 43-4 mark with 10 pins. Garis was also selected to compete as a member of the Pennsylvania team in the 2002 Dapper Dan Classic. He was defeated by three-time Virginia State Champion Christian Staylor, 8-2, in that event. Garis has also finished second at the freestyle state championships and was named "Outstanding Wrestler" in winning a district XI title. Garis becomes the fifth PIAA champion added to the Penn State roster in 2002. "We are really impressed with Cory's level of commitment and dedication to the sport of wrestling," Sunderland said. "He also comes from a championship program at Wilson and knows what it takes to win. We think he'll be a great fit for our program and look forward to working with him next Fall. "Cory had a lot of great offers to go other places, but I think he ultimately felt the academic and athletic environment at Penn State suited him best." Anspach, projected as a heavyweight at Penn State, was a three-year starter at Columbia High School where he posted an 88-20 record. He finished second in the 2002 PIAA Class AA Championships at heavyweight to fellow Penn State recruit C.J. Wonsettler (Scenery Hill, Pa.) and posted a 38-1 record in his senior campaign. He also placed eighth in the PIAAs in 2001 and was third at the 2000 & 2001 Eastern Nationals Tournament. He was named Columbia's "Most Outstanding Wrestler" and also captained the football team "He is a very talented big man that has excellent agility and is a good all-around athlete," Sunderland said. "He has a strong desire to excell at this level and we're real excited to have him join our program." Garis and Anspach join a stellar class of six recruits Penn State secured in November's early period. Among the early recruits were local standouts Nathan Galloway and Matt Storniolo of State College Area High School, fellow PIAA standouts Kyle Cathcart (Clarion, Pa.), Wonsettler and James Yonushonis (Phillipsburg, Pa.) and New England champion Matt Smith (Plaistow, N.H.).
