COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The United States Olympic Committee's Senior Managing Director for Sport Resources, Jim Scherr, has been selected as one of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's distinguished members. Scherr has been one of the Olympic Family's most loyal participants, transferring his athletic prowess on the mat in the 1980s to the decision-making meetings of the U.S. Olympic Movement after retiring from competition in 1990.    As an athlete, Scherr was one of America's best, competing for the U.S. Team in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. Scherr gained valuable international experience heading into the Seoul Games by winning a bronze medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. Scherr was also a two-time silver medalist, finishing one win away from the gold at the 1989 and 1987 Wrestling World Championships. He was a three-time U.S. National champion and was crowned the NCAA National Champion in 1984 for the University of Nebraska, four years after becoming the South Dakota state wrestling champion.    Scherr joined the USOC as the Senior Managing Director for Sport Resources following the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. With very little time to settle in, he immediately joined in on the USOC's focus towards a successful U.S. performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The programs put in place and overseen by the Sport Resource area contributed greatly to Team USA's record setting performance of 34 medals, the most won by any U.S. Olympic Winter Games Team.    Under Scherr's leadership as executive director of USA Wrestling from 1990 to 2000, membership skyrocketed to over 125,000 athletes, and the number of coaches, officials and clubs also increased, creating a total membership of 135,000-plus. The landmark National Team Program contributed to impressive athletic success, including the 1993 and 1995 Freestyle World titles. The U.S. Wrestling Team won eight medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the most of any nation.    Joining Scherr as part of the 2002 Wrestling Hall of Fame class will be four-time Olympic medalist Bruce Baumgartner ('84, '88, '92, '96), and two-time Olympian ('92, '96) and gold medalist Kendall Cross.
