(Lock Haven, Pa.) - Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania head wrestling coach Carl Poff has resigned, Director of Athletics Sharon Taylor announced Friday. Poff will continue in his position as a full-time faculty member with the University's Health and Physical Education Department. Poff's tenure at Lock Haven spanned 12 seasons, first arriving in Lock Haven in 1990 after an eight-year stint (1982-1990) as an assistant coach at Bloomsburg University. Bald Eagle squads under Poff have captured the spotlight as one of the nation's premier wrestling teams, and have recorded a 167-62-3 (.726) dual meet ledger. His 167 career wins made him the all-time leader in coaching victories in Lock Haven wrestling history. Poff's mentoring has yielded a combined 80 national qualifiers, 14 All-Americans, two individual national championships, 30 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champions and 20 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions. His teams have won four PSAC Championships and have combined for three Top-15 finishes at the Division I nationals. Several Bald Eagle wrestling records have been established during Poff's years at Lock Haven, including the 2000-2001 season's 21-2 overall dual meet record which set the mark for most wins in a season. In 1992, The Haven set a school record by sending eight qualifiers into contention at the NCAA tournament. In all but one season, Poff has had six or more wrestlers qualify for the national championships. Additionally, five individual wrestlers during Poff's tenure have reached the 100-wins milestone. He has been named the PSAC Coach of the Year six times, and has twice been honored as the EWL Coach of the Year. "It was a really tough decision - getting out of coaching is a difficult thing for me," said Poff. "I was thinking about what the right time would be for the last couple of years, and as this past year went on, it just seemed to me to be the right time. I feel fortunate that I'm a faculty member here at Lock Haven University and that I had a choice to remain a part of the University in this capacity." "The decision is based on my family. I have three children, ages 12, 10, and four, and they are at an age where they are in a lot of activities, and I wanted to be involved with those activities." "I'm finishing up my 23rd year of coaching at the Division I level, and the last 12 years here at Lock Haven University have been the most rewarding for me. I really appreciate the support of Dr. Willis and our administration here over the years. The Lock Haven community and alumni have also truly been a part of our success." "I've been fortunate and privileged to have had the ability to surround myself with an outstanding staff. That staff has enabled us to recruit quality student-athletes, which in turn gave our fans something to cheer about." "I know Carl's decision to leave coaching was not an easy one," University President Craig Dean Willis said. "His determination, focus, and effort was inspiring, and there's no question that his leadership and efforts with the wrestling program here at Lock Haven will leave a lasting impression on all future teams." "Though we are saddened by Carl's departure from the wrestling program, we are extremely proud of his countless accomplishments and the evolution of Bald Eagle wrestling over his 12 years here at Lock Haven University. We wish him and his family the best in all his future plans." "Carl has done an outstanding job with our program in the 12 years of his tenure," said Taylor. "He was hired into a difficult situation, but was able to work with University officials, alumni and local wrestling fans for the benefit of his athletes and the prominence of our program. I wish him well in his teaching duties and the additional time with his family."
