Germany edged the United States, 22-19, in a Freestyle World Dual meet at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., April 9. Both teams won five bouts in the dual meet. However, Germany was able to claim the match based upon the ability to score bonus points in some of their victories. Claiming wins for the United States were Jeff Prescott (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. , Mike Eierman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Reggie Wright (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. , T.J. Deaguero (Greeley, Colo./UNC Bears) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Rafael Davis (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 97 kg/211.5 lbs. German victories were by Vasilij Zeiher at 55 kg/121 lbs. , Daniel Wild at 60 kg/132 lbs., Ronny Sauter at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. , 1994 World Champion Alexander Leipold at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 1995 World silver medalist Sven Thiele at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Zeiher and Leipold claimed 10-0 technical fall victories for Germany, heling build the team's margin of victory. Zeiher beat Mike Silengo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Leipold stopped Charles Daniels (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army). In addition, the German team scored points in every match including their losses, while Team USA was shut out in two bouts. MATCH SUMMARIES 55 kg Mike Silengo, USA vs. Vasilij Zeiher, Germany Silengo, a resident athlete at the USOC, was a two time state champion in Colorado where he set the pin record in a season at 40. Zeiher countered a Silengo shot with a two point headlock, with a one point exposure for the count. Zeiher followed the first exposure with two more exposures to lead 7-0. Zeiher hit a hi-c with exposure for a three point score and the 10-0 technical fall at 2:10 in the first period. Jeff Prescott, USA vs. Jurgen Schlegel, Germany Prescott a former two time national champion at Penn State is currently rated 9th nationally. He faces Schlegel who placed 7th in the 2001 World Championships. Prescot scored with a two point crotch lift. After a box roll attempt each wrestler earned two points exposure, making the score 4-2 Prescott. Prescot scored a one point single followed by a one point hand to hand gut wrench to lead 6-2. Prescot earned a one point go-behind at the end of the first to lead 7-2. Prescott scored a one point taking down by corner cutting to the far leg with :25 left to lead 8-2. Schlegel responded with a one point takedown followed by a two point gut and one point hold down to win 8-6. 60 kg CC Fisher USA vs. Daniel Wilde Germany CC Fisher a resident at the USOTC wrestled at the University of North Carolina. Fisher scored quickly with a arm drag at 2:46. Wilde scored a hi-c for one and gutted Fisher for two to lead 1-3. Following the break, Fisher scored double leg and nearly laced his opponent, narrowing the score to 3-2. Wilde passed an elbow by for takedown to lead 2-4. Fisher scored another double to trail 3-4. Wilde defends the attacks and wins 3-4. Germany leads the dual score 4-8. 66 kg Mike Eireman, USA vs. Engin Urun, Germany Urun scored first with a 2 on 1 snapdown-drag for a 0-1 lead. Eireman responded with a right side duckunder to tie the score at 1-1. Eireman defended Urun hi-c to a stalemate. Following the break, Eireman was called for passivity and placed down. Urun grapevined a leg but was unable to score, and action was returned to the neutral position. Urun was called for passivity but Eireman elected to keep the action on their feet with :51 left in the period still tied at one a piece. Eireman hit a quick duckunder to lead 2-1 at :35 left. Eireman locks first on the clinch. Eireman missed a headlock off the whistle giving up one point to tie the score at 2-2. Action returned to the neutral position with the first takedown winning the match. Urun was called for passivity with 2:09 left but Eireman was unable to score from par-terre. Eireman nearly scored a single but Urun countered by limp-legging free. Eireman countered Urun's hi-c by climbing with the leg in and scored the critical third point to win 3-2. Germany leads 9-7. Reggie Wright, USA vs. Sergei Kowalenko, Germany Wright is currently rated 10th in the nation at his weight, following a successful career for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Kowalenko placed 20th at the 2001 World Championships. Kowalenko was called for passivity but Wright could not score from par-terre. Kowalenko had a deep single but Wright was able to counter. Wright was then called for passivity and placed in the down position with 1:08 left in the first period. Wright scored one point takedown by countering a single with a spin off to lead 1-0. After the break, Wright quickly showed his speed by hitting a nice low-level duckunder to lead 2-0. Wright scored his third point off of a go-behind with 1:20 left. Wright scores a fourth point with a go-behind, but Kowalenko scored a critical one point reversal just before the buzzer. Wright wins 4-1. The team score is tied at 10-10. Max Shingara, USA vs. Ronny Sauter, Germany Sauter tripped Shingara directly to his back out of bounds to take a 0-3 lead. Shingara defended on bottom and was returned to his feet at 1:25. Shingara scored a one point takedown by jacking up his opponent to trail 1-3. Sauter leads 1-3 going into the break. Shingara battled for a second takedown with 2:32 left to trail 2-3. Shingara scored ankle trap gut to take a 4-3 lead. Sauter scored a takedown off of a shuck from a front headlock to tie the score 4-4.
