Jason Kutz (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named to the U.S. team that will compete at the Northern Quest 2002 World Cup of Wrestling in Spokane, Wash., April 6-7, announced National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson. Kutz will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. Kutz will serve as a backup to World Cup team member Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) who is scheduled to compete at this weight class. Kutz could see action for the United States as an official team member in one or more of the matches, if so decided by the coaching staff. This brings the U.S. team roster to nine athletes to compete at the seven weight classes. There are also two athletes at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) and Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids). In past World Cups, the additional athletes have sometimes seen action for the U.S. team, due to injury or strategic changes in the starting lineup. "He has been wrestling real well," said National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson. "He will get an opportunity to be on our team, and perhaps get some more international experience." Kutz most recently won a gold medal at the 2002 Dave Schultz Memorial International Open. He placed sixth at the 2001 World Team Trials, and third at the 2001 U.S. Nationals. Competing for the Army, he was 2000 Armed Forces champion, and qualified for the 2001 CISM World Military Championships, where he placed seventh. Before joining the Army, Kutz competed on the Div. I level for Lehigh Univ. The United States won the Freestyle World Cup when it was held in Spokane in 1999 and has won four of the past five team titles. The other international wrestling powers expected are Russia, Korea, Germany, Canada and Mongolia. The Quad State Cup, a USA Wrestling event for athletes from Kids through Open, will be held alongside the World Cup. Young wrestlers can do both - wrestle and watch!
