NWMA names annual National Wrestling Journalism Awards; The EIWA Newsletter, Mangan, Schultz, Kurtt, Guymon and InterMat honored Albany, N.Y. - The National Wrestling Media Association, the national professional organization for wrestling journalists, has named the recipients of its Annual Wrestling Journalist Awards. The NWMA has honored the top wrestling journalists in the following categories: Broadcaster of the Year, Print Journalist of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Publicist/SID of the Year, Publication of the Year and Web Page of the Year. Candidates were nominated by the NWMA members. Wrestling Publication of the Year - The EIWA Newsletter Published regularly during the college season, the EIWA Newsletter gives complete coverage of the Div. I college wrestling teams that participate in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). The newsletter is edited by John Harmon, a longtime wrestling journalist with a strong interest in the EIWA. The newsletter includes team and individual rankings, results, features and information items on the athletes and teams that compete in the EIWA. This publication has helped promote EIWA wrestling, and strengthen the sport on the college level. Wrestling Print Journalist of the Year - Michael Mangan, Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin Mangan has served as a sports reporter for the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin. His primary responsibility at the newspaper is to cover high school sports, including wrestling. Those that nominate Mangan applaud the amount of wrestling coverage that he has done, as well as the quality of his work. Mangan not only covers events and writes interesting wrestling features, but he also makes sure that rankings and seeds are posted in the paper. Mangan has a background in broadcasting, having sports experience with radio and television stations in upstate New York. He received a BA in journalism and mass communications from St. Bonaventure Univ. Wrestling Photographer of the Year - G. Wyatt Schultz, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Schultz is a talented photographer who covers a tremendous amount of wrestling events in his state and around the nation. Schultz shoots many pictures for the Predicament, the state newspaper in Iowa. He has also had his work printed in most of the national wrestling magazines, including Wrestling USA and USA Wrestler. Shooting wrestling is one of his passions, and he has made his work available to many publications and individuals. Wrestling SID/Publicist of the Year - Kevin Kurtt, Univ. of Minnesota Kurtt has handled the Sports Information duties for the Univ. of Minnesota for two straight years. His efforts have helped bring tremendous attention to the Gopher wrestling team, which won the 2001 NCAA Tournament and is among the favorites at this year's competition. His many releases helped bring public attention to the Border Brawl, the dual meet between Iowa and Minnesota held in Minneapolis this year that broke the NCAA attendance record. The Gopher media guide is a great resource, and Kurtt's press releases are thorough and provided often. Wrestling Broadcaster of the Year - J Carl Guymon, KSPI radio in Stillwater, Okla. Guymon is the play-by-play announcer for radio broadcasts for Oklahoma State Univ. wrestling, working with color commentator Chris Gambrell to provide tremendous coverage of OSU wrestling events. Guymon is one of the nation's top experts on amateur wrestling, and provides quality insight about the sport on his OSU radio broadcasts. People around the nation can listen to Guymon's work on the internet, as OSU has arranged for the radio shows to go out to the nation through the web. Guymon has a tremendous amount of broadcast experience, having done many television shows that have been broadcast regionally and nationally. He also worked for many years with SportsCast Productions, bringing wrestling results and information from the NCAA Championships to local stations around the nation. A gifted writer, Guymon has written stories for Amateur Wrestling News and other print publications. Wrestling Web Page of the Year - InterMat InterMat Wrestling was founded in 1997 by Tom Owens, a wrestling enthusiast who wanted to bring amateur wrestling fans a faster way of discovering scores, news and rankings. It is one of the first all-amateur wrestling web site. In 1999, editor/webmaster John Fuller came onto the scene and InterMat quickly expanded to a complete information web site for amateur wrestling fans of all ages. InterMat Wrestling introduced features Spotlight Matchup, a weekly breakdown of the top college dual meet, and Conference Call, which recaps each Division I conference on a weekly basis.
