Mitch Hull, National Teams Director for USA Wrestling, has released updated information on the Senior women's wrestling program, outlining specific opportunities during the upcoming season. The material was included in a letter to women athletes ranked in the top six of their weight classes nationally. However, this information is valuable to all Senior women wrestlers, and should be read and understood by athletes and coaches involved in women's wrestling. Among the topics are a May-June training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., the anticipated Resident athlete program, World Team Trials procedures, bonus support and the National Women's Coach. Below is the text of the letter, mailed last week. May - June Training Camp. USA Wrestling has been allocated 12 beds at the OTC from May 1 through June 30 for a women's training camp. If you are interested in coming to the USOC to train prior to the World Team Trials, contact Mitch Hull at the USAW office. Priority for the spaces will be based on current rankings. You do not have to attend the entire time. We will work around year-end school schedules. Separate training will be held each day for the women's team that is attending the camp. Resident Program There will be a Resident Program in place at the OTC in Colorado Springs starting in August 2002. I have had several calls from women expressing interest in participating. (The USOC approved the May-June camp as a "pre-Resident" Program). The goal is to get 12 beds at the OTC. I hope to give out the applications for the program at the National Championships. Our goal, within two years, is to have two resident sites, one at the OTC in Colorado Springs and the other at the United States Olympic Education Center in Northern Michigan University. World Team Trials. The Women's Sport Committee has approved the following process for the selection of the 2002 World Team. All seven weight classes will compete at the World Team Trials in St. Paul, Minn., June 21-23, 2002. The results at the four Olympic weight classes will be final. The athletes that place second and/or third at the Olympic weights will be allowed to challenge the winner at the non-Olympic weight. If there is more than one person challenging, a mini-tournament will be held with the winner of the mini-tournament competing against the No. 1 person at the non-Olympic weight in a best of three format. USA Wrestling will determine when and where the wrestle-off will take place. The wrestle-off can be held no closer than one month prior to the World Championships. Stipend Bonus for 2002/03 year. A new plan has yet to be developed for the next National Team. We will be discussing the plan with several people in May to come up with an incentive-based structure. The monies that are now being added by the USOC can only be used at the Olympic weights. It is important to realize that the amount of money is fixed. The more that is spent on athletes at non-Olympic weights, the less there will be available for athletes at the Olympic weights. I cannot give you the numbers since the meeting has not taken place but I can say that the support at the Olympic weights will be much greater than the non-Olympic weights. Bonus Support As many are aware, a mistake was made in the flyer for the Dave Schultz Tournament stating that bonus money would be paid. Since this was a USA Wrestling mistake we did honor the payment to the U.S. women that placed in the top three. There will be bonus money paid at the U.S. Nationals at the four Olympic weights only. The amount is $750 for first and $250 for second. National Women's Coach USA Wrestling is planning to introduce this person at the National Championships. In the meantime, if you have any input on this, please give Mitch Hull a call.
