The U.S. Army defeated the U.S. Marines, 16-12, the key victory to win the team title at the Armed Forces Freestyle Championships held at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., March 31. The Army won four of the seven matches against the Marines, including three of the first four matches. Scoring a technical fall for the Army was Jeff Bedard (60 kg/132 lbs.). Claiming decision victories for the Army were Max Shingara (66 kg/145.5 lbs.), Eddie Woody (74 kg/163 lbs.) and Paul Devlin (120 kg/264.5 lbs.). Winning bouts for the Marines in the dual meet were Duane Martin (55 kg/121 lbs.), Kenny Owens (84 kg/185 lbs.) and Dan Hicks (96 kg/211.5 lbs.). The Army finished with a 3-0 dual meet record, followed by the Marines with a 2-1 record. The U.S. Navy was third with a 1-2 record and the U.S. Air Force was fourth with a 0-3 record. The Army edged the Marines for the title in the Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships on Saturday, and was also the overall champions this year. Winning individual titles for the Army were Bedard (60 kg/132 lbs.), Shingara (66 kg/145.5 lbs.) and Devlin (120 kg/264.5 lbs.). The Marines had four individual champions: Martin, Owens, Hicks and Brian Van Hoven (74 kg/163 lbs.). Martin and Hicks were the only double champions in 2002, winners of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles in their weight classes. The Armed Forces Championships are the annual national championships for the four branches of the U.S. military. Many of the athletes who compete in this event are nationally ranked on the Senior level on the national scene.
