Russia, which is considered the top power in international freestyle wrestling, will send a team of talented young stars to compete at the Northern Quest 2002 World Cup of Wrestling in Spokane, Wash., April 6-7 Russia has often used young superstars on its World Cup team, athletes who have gone on to major success on the World and Olympic levels. The top talent on the Russian team is 2001 World Champion Gueorgui Gogchelidze at 97 kg/211.5 lbs. Although only 22 years old, he has already proven himself a champion at each level of the sport. Gogchelidze also won the 1998 and 1999 Junior World title and the 1999 World Military Games gold medal. He was second in the 2001 European Championships. The other veteran star is Ramil Islamov at 60 kg/132 lbs., who won many major titles for Uzbekistan before joining the Russian team. Islamov won a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships. He also competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, A 1993 Espoir World Champion, Islamov also boasts two Asian Championships titles. Two young stars competed for Russia at the 2001 World Championships, Soslan Tomaev at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Irbeg Farniev at 74 kg/163 lbs. Neither placed in the top 10 of their weight divisions at the World meet, but both have tremendous promise. Tomaev, 22, was a 1996 Junior World Champion and a 1995 Cadet World Champion. He placed second in the 2001 European Championships. Farniev, just 20 years old, was also a European silver medalist in 2001. He was a Cadet World Youth Games champion in 1998 and won a bronze medal at the 2000 Junior World Championships. Three other Russian World Cup members boast Junior World titles during their careers: Serguei Vitkovski at 74 kg/163 lbs., Khadgimourat Gatsalov at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Oleg Khorpiakov at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Khorpiakov won his Junior World title in 1994, while Vitkovski and Gatsalov claimed their Junior World gold medals in 2001. Khorpiakov won a silver medal at the 2001 World Cup in Baltimore, Md., while Gatsalov placed sixth in the 2001 World Cup. Also competing for Russia are Barzarsad Dachinemaev at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Chamil Oumalatov at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Russia is one of five international wrestling powers competing at the Northern Quest 2002 World Cup of Wrestling. Other nations include the United States, Korea, Canada and Germany. Russia last won the World Cup team title in 1998 in Stillwater, Okla. As an independent nation, Russia has won two World Cup titles (1992, 1998). However, prior to 1992, the unified Soviet Union team claimed a record 15 World Cup team titles, including the first seven World Cup titles (1973-79). Russia is coming off a strong team performance at the 2001 World Championships, where it claimed the team title. At the 2000 Olympic Games, Russia claimed both the medal count and the unofficial standings in the freestyle competition. The Quad State Cup, a USA Wrestling event for athletes from Kids through Open, will be held alongside the World Cup. Young wrestlers can do both - wrestle and watch!
