In the spirit of promoting an elite high school wrestling event, the NWCA and DWA are announcing a change in the format for the Brute US Senior High School Open. The US Senior High School Open has been changed to an open high school event, which makes any high school wrestler eligible to compete. The new event has now become the US High School Open and will still be held April 5-7, 2002 at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the Universityof Delaware. The format change to an open tournament was necessitated by a need to growthis event in its inaugural year. The NWCA, DWA and USA Wrestling arecommitted to providing the highest level of competition to the wrestlerscompeting. This new format will ensure that these goals are met and thatthe US High School Open will become one of the marquee high school events inthe nation. The new format will still provide the perfect venue forcollege coaches to witness the top wrestlers in the nation, as thescholastic duals will take place as scheduled along with the new open tournament. The NWCA still expects over 60 colleges to be in attendance. "We are truly grateful to all of the high school coaches and athletes acrossthe nation who have supported our inaugural open event. We are committed to providing competition at the highest level for these elite athletes as wegrow this event. We are also thankful to our college coaches who are haveagreed to support this innovative concept through its inception", said Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the NWCA. Many of the wrestlers that are competing in the scholastic duals will now be able to also showcase their talent in the US High School Open. The talent level of this signature scholastic event continues to strengthen each year as evidenced by last year's competition field of 49 high school state champions representing 78 high school state titles. Additionally, there were 87 state finalists entered into the event. USA Wrestling will continue to support this event by offering funded status to the two top place winners at each weight class at the US High School Open, which allows for specialized training at the US Olympic Training Center, to work with USA Wrestling's National Coaching Staff. The Champions at each weight class will be invited to USA Wrestling's 2008 Junior Olympic Camp, which features the nation's best stars by invitation only. The high school open is open to any wrestler in grades 9-12. The wrestler does not need to meet any qualifying status to be able to compete. The entry fee is $40 without a USA Wrestling Card or $20 with a card. Scholastic dual entrants can enter the high school open for $10.
