Russia announces lineup for World Dual with the USA in New York, N.Y., April 10

A World Dual meet is set between the two top wrestling nations in the world, the United States and Russia, for Wednesday, April 10, 2002 in New York City, N.Y.  These tough teams will battle at the famous New York Athletic Club, located in downtown Manhattan with action scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be limited seating for this special event, so be encouraged to purchase your tickets early.     The all-star team from Russia will be facing a tough U.S. team with a number of stand-out freestyle wrestlers from the  New York Athletic Club (NYAC), one of the strongest wrestling clubs in the world.     The U.S. lineup for this dual will be announced next week.     The Metropolitan Wrestling Association (MWA) in partnership with the NYAC are in charge of this spectacular World Dual. The MWA were the competition managers for the 2001 World Championships originally scheduled for New York City.     Leading the Russian team is the 2001 World Champion Guegorgui Gogchelidze, competing at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Gogchelidze is a three-time World Championships gold medalist in 1998, 1999 and 2001. He has also claimed golds in the 1999 World Military Championships and the 1999 European Championships.     Another leading world star for Russia is Ramil Islamov at 60 kg/132 lbs. Islamov has appeared in six World Championships earning a gold medal in 1993, a silver in 1997 and a bronze in 1999. He also competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.      The Russian team will feature two wrestlers who are reigning World Championships gold medallists. Sergej Vitkovski at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Khadshimourad Gatsalov at 84 kg/185 lbs. These two competitors are young but are expected to be successful for the Russian team.     Another internationally known member of the Russian team is Olek Khorpiakov who wrestles at the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. weight class. Khorpiakov is a former World champion and a 2000 World Cup silver medallist.     There are some young contenders on the Russian team, including: Soslan Tomaev at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Irbek Farniev at 74 kg/163 lbs. Tomaev is a former two-time World Championships champion in the cadet and junior divisions. He also earned himself a silver medal in the 2001 European Championships. Farniev captured the bronze medal in the 2000 Junior World Championships and a silver medal at the 2001 European Championships.     Rounding out the loaded Russian line up will be Bazarsada Dachinemaev at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Chamil Oumalatov at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.     World Dual meets are among the most popular events hosted by USA Wrestling. The USA faces a top international team in a dual meet format. This event provides fans an opportunity to cheer for Team USA and witness top international Olympic wrestling.    Tickets will cost $20 for general admission withonly 400 tickets available. There are also $60 for a premium seat ticket which would be located matside or in the first or second rows and include a dinner following the event. There are a limited number of tickets so be sure to reserve yours early so that you do not miss this incredible dual between the top world powers in wrestling. If this event sells out in advance, there will be no ticket sales at the door.
